2020 Delaware Senate Election
The 2020 Delaware Senate election was held on November 3, 2020, concurrently with the elections for the Delaware House of Representatives, to elect members to the Delaware General Assembly. 11 of the 21 seats in the Delaware Senate were up for election. Primary elections were held on September 16, 2020. Democrats increased their majority in the Senate by gaining two seats, winning 14 seats compared to 7 seats for the Republicans. Delaware State Senate
The Delaware Senate is the upper house of the Delaware General Assembly, the State legislature (United States), state legislature of the U.S. state of Delaware. It is composed of 21 Senators, each of whom is elected to a four-year term, except when reapportionment occurs, at which time Senators may be elected to a two-year term. There is no limit to the number of terms that a Senator may serve. The Delaware Senate meets at the Delaware State Capitol, Legislative Hall in Dover, DE, Dover. In order to accommodate the ten-year cycle of reapportionment, the terms of office of the several Senators are staggered so that ten Senators are elected to terms of two years at the first biennial general election following reapportionment, followed by two four-year terms, and eleven Senators are elected at the said election for two four-year terms, followed by a two-year term. Marie Pinkney
Marie Pinkney is a social worker and member of the Delaware Senate from New Castle County, Delaware. A newcomer to politics, in September 2020 she defeated incumbent State Senate President Pro Tempore David McBride in the Democratic primary election by a 52.4%-47.6% margin. In the heavily-Democratic majority minority 13th District, the Democratic nomination is considered tantamount to election. Pinkney defeated Republican nominee Alexander Homich in the general election of November 3, 2020. Pinkney is the first openly queer woman elected to serve in Delaware's state legislature, after Senator Karen E. Peterson came out as gay in 2013 while in office. She is one of three LGBTQ+ candidates to be elected to the Delaware General Assembly in 2020, along with Sarah McBride and Eric Morrison.
