2019 Woking Borough Council Election
The 2019 Woking Borough Council election took place on 2 May 2019 to elect one third of members to Woking Borough Council in England coinciding with other local elections held across much of England. Elections in each ward are held in three years out of four. The previous election was held in 2018 and the next election was due to be held in 2020 but was instead deferred to 2021 along with all other ‘2020’ local elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results Summary Shortly before these elections, in April 2019, Cllr. Graham Chrystie (a councillor for Pyrford ward) defected from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats, leaving the ruling Conservative administration going into these elections with exactly half - 15 out of 30 - of the seats on the council. Woking UK Local Election 2019 Map
Woking ( ) is a town and borough in northwest Surrey, England, around from central London. It appears in Domesday Book as ''Wochinges'' and its name probably derives from that of a Saxon landowner. The earliest evidence of human activity is from the Paleolithic, but the low fertility of the sandy, local soils meant that the area was the least populated part of the county in 1086. Between the mid-17th and mid-19th centuries, new transport links were constructed, including the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal and London to Southampton railway line. The modern town was established in the mid-1860s, as the London Necropolis Company began to sell surplus land surrounding the railway station for development. Modern local government in Woking began with the creation of the Woking Local Board in 1893, which became Woking Urban District Council (UDC) in 1894. Woking Borough Council
Woking Borough Council is the local authority for the borough of Woking in the county of Surrey, England. The council consists of 30 councillors, three for each of the 10 wards in the town. It is currently controlled by the Liberal Democrat Party, led by Ann-Marie Barker. The borough council is based at Woking Civic Offices. History Woking Local Board was established in 1893. Such local boards became urban districts in December 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894, and so the local board was replaced by Woking Urban District Council. The urban district was significantly enlarged in 1907 when it absorbed Horsell parish and again in 1933 when it absorbed Byfleet and Pyrford parishes. On 1 April 1974 the district became a non-metropolitan district, altering its powers and responsibilities, although keeping the same area. 2019 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections in parts of the United Kingdom were held on Thursday 2 May 2019, with 248 English local councils, six directly elected mayors in England, and all 11 local councils in Northern Ireland being contested. A total of 8,886 councillors were elected: terms were up for 8,861 seats, but eight elections for a total of 14 seats were postponed due to the death of a candidate; there were also casual vacancies to be filled: 38 in England (including on nine councils with no other elections) and one on Dundee City Council in Scotland. With the exception of areas whose electoral cycle has temporarily changed (due to a boundary review) or permanently changed, or that have been reorganised, the seats up for election in England were last contested in the 2015 local elections, on the same day as the general election of that year. 2018 Woking Borough Council Election
The 2018 Woking Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect one third of members to Woking Borough Council in England coinciding with other local elections held across much of England. Elections in each ward are held in three years out of four. Woking was one of the boroughs subject to a trial of voter ID requiring the production of photographic ID or 2 other forms of ID at the polling station. Results The Conservatives lost one seat to the Liberal Democrats, with Mount Hermon councillor Mark Pengelly losing by a margin of just 17 votes to Liam Lyons, who had been defeated by Pengelly two years earlier. The Conservatives also failed to win their target seats of Byfleet and St John's by narrow margins, and came within 10 votes of losing in Goldsworth Park, although they held their seats in Horsell, Knaphill, Heathlands and Pyrford with very large majorities. 2021 Woking Borough Council Election
The 2021 Woking Borough Council election took place on 6 May 2021 to elect members of Woking Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. Across the whole of Surrey there was also the Surrey County Council election and the election to be Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The Woking Borough Council election and the Surrey PCC election had both been delayed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. After the Borough elections the Conservative Party remained, by a margin of just one seat, the largest party on Woking Borough Council.
