Rachel Reese
Rachel Hadley Reese (born ) is a New Zealand local-body politician. She was the mayor of Nelson from 2013 to 2022. She was Nelson's first female mayor. Early life and education Reese was born in Mosgiel and grew up in Dunedin. She attended St Hilda's Collegiate School, leaving at aged 16 to enter the University of Otago from where she graduated with a commerce degree at age 19. She also has Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Dispute Resolution) from Massey University and is a qualified Mediator and Arbitrator. She has worked in Mount Isa and Melbourne in Australia, as well as in Auckland. She moved to Nelson in about 1997, her family having connections in the area, with her parents owning property on Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds. Melvyn Francis Courtney (born 2 October 1943) is a Nelson City Councillor and a former Labour then Independent Member of Parliament for Nelson, in the South Island of New Zealand. Early life and family Courtney was born in Christchurch on 2 October 1943, the son of Clifford Francis and Joyce Elizabeth Courtney. He grew up in the suburb of Spreydon, and was educated at Christchurch Technical College. His family wished to get a state house, but faced constant rejection from state housing officials. They went to local MP Mabel Howard who helped them to be accepted. His father had problems with alcohol and eventually left the family. As a 14-year old he got an after-school job at a grocery store eventually leaving school at 16 to work at the store full time before shifting to work at a supermarket. Michael Grahame Ward (born 18 July 1942) is a former Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand politician. He was an MP for one term from 2002 to 2005. The 2019 New Zealand local elections were triennial elections to select local government officials and district health board members. Under section 10 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, a "general election of members of every local authority or community board must be held on the second Saturday in October in every third year" from the date the Act came into effect in 2001, meaning 12 October 2019. The mayor of Nelson is the head of the municipal government of Nelson, New Zealand, and presides over the Nelson City Council. The mayor is directly elected using a single transferable vote electoral system. The current mayor is Nick Smith, who was elected in September 2022. History 1874–1899 Joseph Dodson was elected as the first mayor of Nelson on 1 May 1874 by the city councillors under the Municipal Corporations Act 1867. He was unanimously elected to the position. Dodson was a former member of the Nelson Board of Works. Councillor Fell noted that Dodson had taken great interest in the welfare of Nelson and was an upright gentleman with integrity. Nelson City Council is a unitary local authority. It has its headquarters in Nelson. History Nelson City Council was created in 1992. Local governance of Nelson began with Nelson Province in 1853, which covered the entire upper South Island. Provinces were abolished in 1876 and replaced with smaller counties and boroughs, including a Nelson Borough. In the 1989 local government reforms, Nelson was made part of the Nelson-Marlborough Regional Council, then in 1992 that regional council was split into multiple parts, including today's Nelson City Council. Nelson is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate, returning one Member of Parliament to the House of Representatives of New Zealand. From 1853 to 1860, the electorate was called Town of Nelson.
