2019 BDO World Darts Championship
The 2019 BDO World Professional Darts Championship was the 42nd World Championship organised by the British Darts Organisation, and the 34th and final staging at the Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green. Glen Durrant was the two-time defending men's champion after beating Mark McGeeney, 7–6 in the previous year's final. Durrant successfully defended his title to become the first three times consecutive BDO Men's World Champion since Eric Bristow in 1986, and the first male player in history to win his first three world championship finals. Lisa Ashton was the two-time defending women's champion, after winning her fourth world title, with a 3–1 win over Anastasia Dobromyslova in 2018, but was defeated in the first round by Mikuru Suzuki. Suzuki went on to become the fifth BDO Women's World Champion, after defeating Lorraine Winstanley 3–0 in the final. Lakeside Leisure Complex
The Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, conferencing, entertainment and associated leisure complex in Frimley Green in west Surrey. It hosted in January the open/men's and women's BDO World Darts Championship from 1986 to 2019. History The complex was established in 1972, when Bob Potter (born 1928) bought Wharfenden House and the surrounding grounds and lake. He soon doubled the hall to 1,000 seats principally for hosting comedians and musicians, including North American and internationally acclaimed acts. The Lakeside had a fire later that decade and re-opened. During the 25th year of hosting the World Darts Championship, in 2010 the lake had largely iced over by 7 January. That day the body of a man, a hotel guest for the competition week, was found. Landowner-managers, Bob Potter Leisure Limited, were fined £85,000 for health and safety violations. Lisa Ashton
Lisa Ashton (born 27 August 1970) is an English professional darts player who currently plays in World Darts Federation (WDF) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. She is a four-time BDO World Darts Women's Champion and has won over 100 titles in women's darts. In 2020, she became the first woman to win a PDC Tour Card at the PDC Q-School. Career Ashton reached the quarter-finals of the 2007 Women's World Masters, beating 1996 finalist Heike Jenkins (Ernst) in the last 16 before losing to Rilana Erades. The next year, she reached the semi-finals, beating Anne Kirk in the last 16 and then beat Australia's Cathy Shaw, before losing to eventual winner Francis Hoenselaar. Wayne Warren
Wayne Warren (born 12 June 1962) is a Welsh professional darts player who plays in events of the World Darts Federation (WDF). He was the last ever BDO World Darts Champion. He is the oldest player to become world champion. Darts career BDO Warren qualified for the 2005 BDO World Darts Championship, where he was the only Welshman in the field. He lost 3–0 in the first round to third seed Mervyn King. Warren has come close to qualifying for Lakeside on two occasions, falling two games short of qualifying for the 2008 World Championship in a loss to Mike Veitch who eventually qualified, and then falling at the same hurdle again in the qualifiers for the 2009 World Championship, losing to Robbie Green. Dave Parletti
Dave Parletti (born 22 April 1983) is an English professional darts player who plays in events of the World Darts Federation. Career In 2017, Parletti won the Jersey Classic. In 2018, he won the Welsh Masters and the Winmau Wolverhampton Open, and also reached the Last 16 of the 2018 World Masters. In 2019, he won the Welsh Classic, after defeating Martin Adams in the final, whilst earlier in the year he picked up the Romanian Open, beating Gary Robson in the final 6-5. Chris Landman (born 17 January 1981) is a Dutch professional darts player, currently playing in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Career In 2017, Landman won the Catalonian Open, reached the quarter-final of the WDF World Cup Singles, and reached the Last 16 of the World Masters. He qualified for the 2018 BDO World Darts Championship as one of the Regional Table Qualifiers, losing to Derk Telnekes 0-3 in the preliminary round. Richard Veenstra (born 10 July 1981) is a Dutch professional darts player who currently plays in World Darts Federation (WDF) events. He is a Dutch Open champion, BDO World Trophy and Finder Darts Masters finalist. Multiple medalist of WDF World Cup and WDF Europe Cup. Gary Robson (darts Player)
Gary "Big Robbo" Robson (born 19 June 1967) is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation events. Robson now resides in the small rural village of Rothbury, Northumberland. Career Robson qualified twice for the World Championships, but was beaten in the first round on each occasion. He made it for a third time in 2004, but found himself 2–0 down in sets against Steve Coote. However, Robson recovered and took the match to a sudden death deciding leg, which he won. Bobby George commented that "you won't see browner darts in this tournament than that match". Robson had another excellent performance in losing to 'Silverback' Tony O'Shea in the second round. Scott Mitchell (darts Player)
Scott Mitchell (born 5 June 1970) is an English professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation tournaments. His most notable achievement was winning the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship. Darts career Early career Before he made his mark in the BDO, Mitchell qualified for the 2007 UK Open, winning his first round match 8–4 against Brian Cathcart before losing out in the second round to 2006 Lakeside World champion Jelle Klaasen. Mitchell won the England Classic and Swiss Open in 2009 which helped him qualify for the 2010 BDO World Championship as the 14th seed. However, he lost in the first round 3–2 to Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney. Michael Unterbuchner
Michael Unterbuchner (born 23 May 1988) is a German darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He reached the semi-finals of the BDO World Championship on two of his three appearances. Career In 2017, Unterbuchner reached the last 48 of the World Masters. He qualified for the 2018 BDO World Darts Championship as one of the Playoff Qualifiers and played David Cameron in the preliminary round, winning 3–2. Wesley Harms
Wesley Harms (born 11 June 1984) is a Dutch former professional darts player. Career Harms won the BDO International Open in 2011, defeating Stephen Bunting in the final. Harms qualified for the 2012 BDO World Darts Championship as the 13th seed. He defeated Martin Phillips, Robbie Green, and fellow débutant Paul Jennings to reach the semi-final where he was defeated 6–5 by Tony O'Shea. Harms's performance, followed by subsequent strong runs in the coming months, saw him briefly top the WDF world rankings. Jim Williams (born 27 July 1984) is a Welsh professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Career Williams first ever rose to prominence in October 2012 at the Winmau World Masters in Hull. There he beat four players in the preliminary rounds to reach the main stage, most notably defeating reigning Lakeside World Champion Christian Kist 3–2 in his final match. 1994 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1994 Embassy World Darts Championship was held following two years of controversy within the sport of darts. After the 1993 Championships, several players decided it was time to part company with the British Darts Organisation and form their own organisation, known as the World Darts Council. By the start of this tournament, the WDC were in the closing days of their own 1994 World Championship, with Dennis Priestley going on to beat Phil Taylor in the final. Phil Taylor, Dennis Priestley, Rod Harrington, Alan Warriner, Peter Evison, Richie Gardner, Jocky Wilson, Eric Bristow, Keith Deller, John Lowe, Bob Anderson, Cliff Lazarenko, Kevin Spiolek, Jamie Harvey, Mike Gregory and Chris Johns were the players who formed the WDC and therefore did not participate at these 1994 Championships.
