2019 Allerdale Borough Council Election
The 2019 Allerdale Borough Council election took place on 2 May 2019, to elect all 49 members of Allerdale Borough Council in Cumbria, United Kingdom. The number of councillors had been reduced from 56 at the previous election, meaning several seats were combined. Four seats were uncontested, all of which were won by members of the Conservative Party. The result was a change in administration of the council, from a Labour Party minority to a coalition of Conservatives and independents. However, the council technically remains in No Overall Control. Allerdale Borough Council
Allerdale is a non-metropolitan district of Cumbria, England, with borough status. Its council is based in Workington and the borough has a population of 93,492 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 96,422 at the 2011 Census. The Borough of Allerdale was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the municipal borough of Workington, the urban districts of Maryport, Cockermouth and Keswick; and the rural districts of Cockermouth and Wigton, all of which were within the administrative county of Cumberland. In 1995 Allerdale was granted borough status. The name derives from the ancient region of Allerdale, represented latterly by the two wards of Cumberland, called Allerdale-above-Derwent and Allerdale-below-Derwent, the present borough corresponding largely to the latter with parts of the former. Cumbria
Cumbria ( ) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in North West England, bordering Scotland. Crossing The Floor
In parliamentary systems, politicians are said to cross the floor if they formally change their political affiliation to a different political party than which they were initially elected under (as is the case in Canada and the United Kingdom). In Australia though, this term simply refers to Members of Parliament (MPs) who dissent from the party line and vote against the express instructions of the party whip while retaining membership in their political party (at least for the time being).
