2018 World Rowing Championships
The 2018 World Rowing Championships were the World Rowing Championships held at the regatta course in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The event was held from 9 to 16 September. Events held were men and women's open class, lightweight class, and para-rowing. Prior FISA regattas that had been held in Plovdiv include the 1999 and 2012 World Rowing Junior Championships, and the 2011 European Rowing Championships. The 2018 World Rowing Championships were the first world rowing championships where the number of men’s and women’s events was equal. The world governing body made that decision in 2017. Host selection During 2013, Plovdiv and Sarasota, Florida both applied to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. In April 2013, a committee of International Rowing Federation (FISA) officials visited the city in Florida and they went to Plovdiv the following month. Plovdiv ( bg, Пловдив, ), is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, standing on the banks of the Maritsa river in the historical region of Thrace. Dmytro Valeriyovych Mikhay ( uk, Дмитро Валерійович Міхай; born 27 February 1990) is a Ukrainian rower. He won the gold medal in the quadruple sculls at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, with what is still a world's fastest time as of September 2018. He competed in the double sculls at the 2012 Summer Olympics with Artem Morozov. David Watts (born 1992) is an Australian rower. A national champion and national representative, he is a 2016 Olympian and won silver medals at the 2015 and 2018 World Rowing Championships. School, club and state rowing Watts was born in England before moving to Perth, Western Australia. As a child he was a successful state swimmer and a young member of a teenage squad which swam across the arduous English Channel establishing himself as a determined, young athlete, aged 13 years. Campbell Watts (born 10 November 1995) is an Australian rower. He is an Australian national champion who participated at the 2018 World Rowing Championships, where he won a silver medal. Club and state rowing Watts was educated at St Joseph's College Hunters Hill where he took up rowing. Watts' senior club rowing has been from the Sydney University Boat Club. He competed for the SUBC at the 2014 and 2015 Intervarsity Championships. In 2014 he rowed in the Sydney University eight and a coxed four and won both titles. In 2015 he competed in the coxed four and the eight and won a universities title in the eight.
