2018 San Jose Earthquakes Season
The 2018 San Jose Earthquakes season was the club's 36th year of existence, their 21st season in Major League Soccer and their 11th consecutive season in the top-flight of American soccer. Background The 2017 season was one of continued change under the leadership of general manager Jesse Fioranelli, with head coach Dominic Kinnear and assistant coach John Spencer being replaced by San Jose's technical director Chris Leitch and Director of Methodology Alex Covelo on June 25, 2017. The San Jose Earthquakes finished the 2017 season with a victory over Minnesota United FC that sent them to the MLS playoffs for the first time since 2012. San Jose Earthquakes
The San Jose Earthquakes are an American professional soccer team based in San Jose, California. The Earthquakes compete as a member club of the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). Originally as the San Jose Clash, the franchise began play in 1996 as one of the charter members of the league. The Earthquakes took part in the first game in MLS history, defeating D.C. United 1–0. Generation Adidas
Generation Adidas is a joint venture between Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer aimed at raising the level of young professional soccer talent in the United States. The program, sponsored by Adidas, offers professional-ready players in the U.S. developmental system not yet eligible for the MLS SuperDraft early entry, allowing MLS to compete with foreign professional clubs without comparable restrictions on player signing. Clemson Tigers Men's Soccer
The Clemson Tigers men's soccer team represent Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division I soccer. The program has won 3 NCAA national championships, 14 Atlantic Coast Conference championships, and hosted 3 Hermann Trophy winners ( Bruce Murray in 1987, Wojtek Krakowiak in 1998, and Robbie Robinson in 2019). History Clemson began sponsoring a soccer team in 1934, playing a hybrid schedule of colleges and prep schools. The team was discontinued after the 1939 season. In 1967, the university decided to re-add soccer as a varsity sport. Dr. I. M. Ibrahim, who was a chemistry professor at the time, was chosen to lead the program. Andrew Tarbell
Andrew Tarbell (born October 7, 1993) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo. Career College Tarbell spent his entire college career at Clemson University. He started all 55 games during his four-year career with the Tigers and led them to an ACC Tournament title in 2014 and was named to the All-ACC First team. In 2015, Tarbell led the Tigers to the National Title game, where they lost to Stanford. He was also named to the all ACC First team and led the ACC with 84 saves. Professional Andrew Tarbell was drafted in the 8th position of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes. Tarbell signed a Generation Adidas contract with the Earthquakes. Homegrown Player Rule (Major League Soccer)
The Homegrown Player Rule is a Major League Soccer program that allows MLS teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. Before the creation of the rule in 2008, every player entering Major League Soccer would have to be assigned through one of the existing MLS player allocation processes, such as the MLS SuperDraft. MLS roster rules allow a team to sign players to contracts similar to Generation adidas contracts, which do not count against the MLS salary budget and may earn a much higher salary than the league minimum. MLS has since removed this wording from the roster rules. That means homegrown players will not count against the salary budget only if they are registered using supplemental roster slots, but will still count against the salary budget if they are registered using senior roster slots. Georgetown Hoyas Men's Soccer
The Georgetown Hoyas men's soccer team represents Georgetown University in all men's Division I NCAA soccer competitions. The Georgetown Hoyas joined the new Big East Conference on July 1, 2013, with other private schools from the former Big East Conference in which they previously competed. They won a national championship in 2019, and was the national runner-up in 2012. James Thomas "JT" Marcinkowski (born May 9, 1997) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for Major League Soccer club San Jose Earthquakes. Career College and amateur Marcinkowski played for the Georgetown Hoyas for three seasons, from 2015 to 2017, where he achieved a 0.84 goals against average (GAA) over 56 appearances. Tacoma Defiance, formerly Seattle Sounders FC 2, is an American professional soccer team based in Tacoma, Washington, U.S. that competes in the MLS Next Pro, the third tier of the national soccer pyramid, as the reserve team of Seattle Sounders FC. Matt Bersano (born September 10, 1992) is an American professional soccer player who plays for Major League Soccer club Austin FC. Career Youth, college and amateur After spending his youth career with the Real Salt Lake AZ academy, Bersano began his college career at Oregon State University. He made a total of 54 appearances and recorded 14 clean sheets for the Beavers before transferring to Penn State University in 2015. Chris Leitch (born April 1, 1979 in Pickerington, Ohio) is a retired American soccer player who is currently the general manager and a former head coach for the San Jose Earthquakes. Career College Leitch played college soccer at the University of North Carolina, leading them to the NCAA Championship in 2001, setting a school record for games played (88) and starts (87). Professional Leitch was drafted by Columbus Crew in the fourth round of the 2002 MLS SuperDraft, but only played 13 games for his hometown team in his first professional season. Leitch was traded to the MetroStars with Jeff Matteo for Ross Paule prior to the 2003 season. He became a regular in the Metro lineup late in the year, playing in 15 games.
