2017 WSBL Season
The 2017 WSBL season was the 29th season of the Women's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 17 March, with Perry Lakes, East Perth and Rockingham hosting Stirling, Kalamunda and Perth respectively. The 2017 WSBL All-Star Game was played on 5 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 29 July. The finals began on Friday 4 August and ended on Friday 1 September, when the Perry Lakes Hawks defeated the Mandurah Magic in the WSBL Grand Final. Regular season The regular season began on Friday 17 March and ended on Saturday 29 July after 20 rounds of competition. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. East Perth Eagles
East Perth Eagles is an NBL1 West club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The club is a division of East Perth District Basketball Association (EPDBA), the major administrative basketball organisation in Perth's north eastern suburbs. The Eagles play their home games at Herb Graham Recreation Centre. Club history Background Basketball in East Perth began in 1946 with the formation of the Western Australian Basketball Association. As a founding member of the association, the organisation was originally known as the Youth Catholic Workers (YCW) Highgate Basketball Club. In 1948, they were renamed Highgate Basketball Club. Steal (basketball)
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally causes a turnover by their positive, aggressive action(s). This can be done by deflecting and controlling, or by catching the opponent's pass or dribble of an offensive player. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called. Steals are credited to the defensive player who first causes the turnover, even if they do not end up with possession of the live ball. To earn a steal, the defensive player must be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. Whenever a steal is recorded by a defensive player, an offensive player must be credited as committing a turnover. Assist (basketball)
In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket. An assist is also credited when a basket is awarded due to defensive goaltending. There is some judgment involved in deciding whether a passer should be credited with an assist. An assist can be scored for the passer even if the player who receives the pass makes a basket after dribbling the ball for a short distance. In basketball, a rebound, sometimes colloquially referred to as a board, is a statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a routine part in the game; if a shot is successfully made possession of the ball will change, otherwise the rebound allows the defensive team to take possession. Rebounds are also given to a player who tips in a missed shot on his team's offensive end. A rebound can be grabbed by either an offensive player or a defensive player. Rebounds are divided into two main categories: "offensive rebounds", in which the ball is recovered by the offensive side and does not change possession, and "defensive rebounds", in which the defending team gains possession. Point (basketball)
Points in basketball are used to keep track of the score in a game. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). If a player makes a field goal from within the three-point line, the player scores two points. If the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line, the player scores three points. Toni Farnworth
Antonia "Toni" Farnworth (née Edmondson) (born 10 May 1987) is a New Zealand professional basketball player for the Ringwood Hawks of the NBL1 South. She has spent most of her career playing in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) in Australia and has been a long-time representative and captain of the New Zealand national team, the Tall Ferns. Floreat is a residential suburb west-northwest of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Carly Boag (born 4 September 1991) is an Australian-Canadian basketball player for the Mandurah Magic of the NBL1 West. She played college basketball for the Minot State Beavers and has played in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) for the Sydney Uni Flames and Bendigo Spirit. Stacey Barr (born 12 November 1992) is an Australian rules footballer and basketball player. She has played for the Fremantle Football Club in the AFL Women's competition, and has played in the Women's National Basketball League for the Perth Lynx. Deanna Smith
Deanna Smith (born 24 December 1980) is an Australian former professional basketball player. She is best known for her time spent in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), but has also spent time in England, Portugal, Russia and Italy. Klara Wischer (born 9 April 1991) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Southside Flyers of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL).
