470 (dinghy)
The 470 (Four-Seventy) is a double-handed monohull planing dinghy with a centreboard, Bermuda rig, and centre sheeting. Equipped with a spinnaker, trapeze and a large sail-area-to-weight ratio, it is designed to plane easily, and good teamwork is necessary to sail it well. The name comes from the boat's length of . The 470 is a popular class with both individuals and sailing schools, offering a good introduction to high-performance boats without being excessively difficult to handle, but it is not a boat designed for beginners. Its smaller sister, the 420, is a stepping stone to the 470. The 470 is a World Sailing International Class and has been an Olympic class since the 1976 games. Santander, Spain
Santander () is the capital of the autonomous community and historical region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain. Hannah Mills
Hannah Louise Mills, (born 29 February 1988) is a British competitive sailor and two-time world champion in the Women's 470 class, having won in 2012 and 2019. Mills won a silver medal for Team GB with her crew Saskia Clark in the 2012 Olympics, she followed this up with a gold in the same event at both the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and, partnered by Eilidh McIntyre, the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo Early life Mills was born in Cardiff, Wales, and started sailing at Cardiff Sailing Centre (then Llanishen Sailing Centre) when she was 8 years old after trying sailing on a family holiday in Cornwall. Pavlos Kagialis (born 17 July 1984) is a Greek competitive sailor. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the Sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's 470, men's 470 taking the third place, along with Panagiotis Mantis. Kagialis and Panagiotis Mantis, Mantis won the bronze medal at the 470 World Championships in 2013, and the couple again took the third place at the 2014 World Championships in Santander. Panagiotis Mantis (born 30 September 1981) is a Greek competitive sailor. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the men's 470, along with Pavlos Kagialis, winning the bronze medal. Mantis and Kagialis also won the bronze medal at the 470 World Championships in 2013, while they took another time the third place at the 2014 World Championships in Santander. Will Ryan (sailor)
William Ryan (born 23 December 1988) is an Australian sailor and an Olympic champion and five time World champion in the men's 470 event with Mathew Belcher. Sailing career Will Ryan experienced sailing when only two days old when he watched the 1988 Sydney to Hobart race in his grandfather's boat with his family. In his early years he was inspired by his grandfather and sailed in an old Sabot dinghy on Lake Macquarie in New South Wales. At the age of 11, Ryan competed in his first race with the Toronto Amateur Sailing Club. Ryan competed in the Laser Radial class at the 2006 Youth Sailing World Championships. Mathew "Mat" Belcher, (born 20 September 1982) is an Australian sailor and a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 470 dinghy, who currently competes with crew Will Ryan. In 2011, following World Championship and World Cup success, he and Malcolm Page were shortlisted by the International Sailing Federation for the ISAF World Sailor of the Year Awards. Belcher was selected as the Australian flag bearer for the closing ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics after winning a second gold medal and third successive medal in the 470 class. Belcher is regarded as the most successful Australian Olympic sailor in history with two gold and one silver medal, adding to his 10 world titles. David "Dave" Hughes (born January 22, 1978, in Ithaca, New York) is a US Olympian, multi-time World and national champion, and professional sailor. Hughes was a member of the 2020(21), 2016, and 2012 US Olympic Teams. He is best known for his accomplishments on the Olympic sailing circuit as both an athlete and coach. Hughes lives in Miami, FL. He represented the United States, at four Olympics: two times partner Graham Biehl, in 2008 and 2012 and twice with partner Dave Hughes in 2016 and 2020.
