2017 Reno 1868 FC Season
The 2017 Reno 1868 FC season is the club's inaugural season of existence, and their first in the United Soccer League, the second tier of American soccer. Background Ahead of the 2017 season, there had been three professional soccer clubs in Northern Nevada: Reno Rattlers, Northern Nevada Aces, and Nevada Wonders. The announcement of an expansion franchise to join the USL was announced in September 2015. The club's named was decided with a contest known as "USL Reno 2017". Nearly 5,000 entries were submitted, followed by fans choosing from amongst the top six names: Reno FC, FC Reno, Reno Silver FC, Reno City FC, Reno United, or Reno 1868. The fans response refined the contest down to three finalists—Reno FC, Reno United, and Reno 1868—with the winner being Reno 1868, a nod to the founding year of the City of Reno. Reno 1868 FC
Reno 1868 FC was an American professional soccer team based in Reno, Nevada. Founded in 2015, the team made its debut in the USL Championship in March 2017 and ceased operations after the 2020 season. History Previously, northern Nevada has had three other professional minor league soccer teams: Reno Rattlers, Northern Nevada Aces, and Nevada Wonders. Nevertheless, Reno now has a large youth soccer base and growing popularity of the sport. On September 16, 2015, USL announced that they would expand to Reno, Nevada starting in 2017. The club would be owned by Herbert Simon. To generate interest and increased fan involvement with a successful acquisition of a team, the new "USL Reno 2017" team would be named through a contest. Matt Bersano (born September 10, 1992) is an American professional soccer player who plays for Major League Soccer club Austin FC. Career Youth, college and amateur After spending his youth career with the Real Salt Lake AZ academy, Bersano began his college career at Oregon State University. He made a total of 54 appearances and recorded 14 clean sheets for the Beavers before transferring to Penn State University in 2015. In his lone season with the Nittany Lions, Bersano made 13 appearances and finished with a 1.19 Goals Against Average and five clean sheets. Brenton Griffiths (born 9 February 1991) is a Jamaican footballer who plays as a defender. Career Youth Griffiths played for St. Catherine High School in the parish St Catherine and Glenmuir High School in Clarendon, Jamaica before earning a soccer scholarship to Tyler Junior College in Texas. Kip Warren Colvey II (born 15 March 1994) is a New Zealand former professional footballer. He last played for Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer. Early life Colvey was born in Hawaii, but grew up in the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand. Portland Timbers 2 is an American professional soccer team based in Portland, Oregon. The team, often referred to as "T2", serves as the reserve squad for the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer (MLS). Brent Anthony Richards (born May 20, 1990) is an American soccer player who currently plays for Orange County SC in the USL Championship. Career High school Richards played for Camas High School of Camas, WA all four years of his high school career. His most notable year was his fourth and final year, where he led the team to a victory in the WIAA 3A state championship game, alongside future University of Washington teammate Quinton Beasley. Nick von Niederhäusern (born 28 September 1989) is a Swiss footballer who currently plays for SC Young Fellows Juventus in the Swiss Challenge League.
