2017 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup
The 2017 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup was the eleventh season of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. The season, for the fifth year contested by the riders on equal KTM 250cc 4-stroke Moto3 bikes, was held over 13 races in seven meetings on the Grand Prix motorcycle racing calendar, beginning at Jerez on 6 May and ending on 24 September at the MotorLand Aragón. Japanese rider Kazuki Masaki won the championship, securing the title after the first Aragón race. The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup is a motorcycle racing series contested by young, up-and-coming motorcycle riders, who have not had experience in a motorcycle grand prix previously. The class was founded in 2007, and since then a number of the rookies have progressed through to the 125cc/Moto3 championship in MotoGP. Prior to the 2013 season, a 2-stroke KTM RC 125cc engine was used. The year 2013 saw a change of machinery to the 4-stroke KTM RC250RBR, following the introduction of the four-stroke Moto3 class. The Spaniard José Antonio Rueda was the first racer to win the Cup title and his first World Championship title in the same year (2022). Xavier Artigas Lopez (born 27 May 2003) is a Spanish motorcycle racer, riding for CF Moto Prüstel in the Moto3 World Championship. Career Early career 2018 Artigas bought attention to himself in the 2018 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, where he won a race, came in second place three times, and finished third once. He finished third in the standings, behind Turkish twins Can Öncü and Deniz Öncü. 2019 Artigas moved up to the Moto3 Junior World Championship for the 2019 season, and ended with one race win, one second place, and two third place podium finishes, once again finishing third in the standings. Victor Steeman (15 June 2000 – 11 October 2022) was a Dutch motorcycle racer. He competed in the Supersport 300 World Championship intermittently from 2018 until 2022 when he died from his injuries from a crash at the first race of Portimão round of that season. Biography Supersport 300 World Championship Born in Zevenaar, Steeman made his world debut in 2018 in the Supersport 300, participating in the last two races of the 2018 season as a replacement rider. Riding the KTM RC 390 R, he scored his first world championship point, and ended in fifteenth position in the Portimão race. The following season, he was brought in as a starting rider for the German team Freudenberg, riding a KTM. He had won first pole position in the Jerez event, which allowed him to start in the lead in both races held during the event. Deniz Öncü (born 26 July 2003) is a Turkish motorcycle racer, currently competing in the Moto3 World Championship, for team Red Bull KTM Tech3. His twin brother, Can Öncü, is also a motorcycle racer.
