2017 Powys County Council Election
The fifth election to the Powys County Council since local government reorganization in Wales in 1995 was held on 4 May 2017, along with other local government elections. It was preceded by the 2012 election and will be followed by the 2022 election. Results overview Sixteen seats were uncontested and, in another seat, Yscir, no one initially stood at all for the seat (the only ward in Wales where this happened). Nine Independent seats, out of the thirty won, were due to only one candidate standing for election. Five of the seven Labour seats and one each of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat seats were also uncontested. Talybont-on-Usk (electoral Ward)
Talybont-on-Usk is the name of an electoral ward in the south of Powys, Wales. It covers three local government communities and elects a councillor to Powys County Council. Description The Talybont-on-Usk ward covers the communities of Glyn Tarell, Llanfrynach and Talybont-on-Usk, with the populated areas lying to the north of the ward, south of the town of Brecon. The ward was created by ''The County of Powys (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1998''. Prior to 1998 the ward was called Llanfrynach/Talybont-on-Usk. List Of Electoral Wards In Powys
This list of electoral wards in Powys includes council wards, which elect councillors to Powys County Council and community wards, which elect councillors to community councils. Powys is administered by Powys County Council and has 68 (73 until 2022) elected councillors representing 60 (73 until 2022) council wards. Although it is a unitary authority, the highway functions of the council, along with the allocation of small grants, are delegated to the three Shire Committees. Local elections take place every five years. Some of the electoral wards are coterminous with communities (civil parishes) of the same name. There are 112 communities in the principal area. Llangunllo (electoral Ward)
Llangunllo with Norton ( cy, Llangunllo gyda Norton) formerly known as Llangunllo, is the name of an electoral wards in central Powys, Wales. It covers the community of Llangunllo as well as the neighbouring communities of Llanfihangel Rhydithon and Whitton with the village of Norton. The ward elects a county councillor to Powys County Council. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 1,255. Following a boundary review the Llangunllo ward was renamed Llangunllo with Norton, with the addition of the village of Norton from the neighbouring Presteigne ward. The community of Llanddewi Ystradenny was removed to form part of a new Ithon Valley ward. Llandrindod East/West
Llandrindod East/Llandrindod West (commonly Llandrindod East/West) was the name of an electoral ward in the town of Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales. It was abolished in 2022, and merged with Llandrindod South. Description Llandrindod East/West covered the town centre of Llandrindod Wells, including the High Street, Ysgol Calon Cymru (Llandrindod Campus), railway station and hospital. The West border was defined by the River Ithon and to the south by the Arlais Brook. The ward of Llandrindod South lied to the south, Llandrindod North to the north and Llanyre to the west. Glasbury (electoral Ward)
Glasbury is the name of an electoral wards in central Powys, Wales. It covers the community of Glasbury (which contains part of the village of the same name) as well as the neighbouring communities of Clyro and Painscastle. The ward elects a county councillor to Powys County Council. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 2,299. Newtown Central
Newtown Central was the name of a county electoral ward in the town of Newtown, Powys, Wales. It remains as a community ward to Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council. Description Newtown Central ward covered the area west of Newtown town centre and immediately south of the River Severn. The ward elected two councillors to Montgomeryshire District Council and Powys County Council, but since the May 1999 election it elected one county councillor to Powys County Council. Llanwddyn () was the name of an electoral wards in the far north of Powys, Wales. It covered the community of Llanwddyn (which gives it its name) as well as the neighbouring communities of Llangynog and Pen-y-Bont-Fawr. The ward elected a county councillor to Powys County Council. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 1,036. Yscir with Honddu Isaf and Llanddew (formerly known as Yscir) is the name of an electoral ward in southern Powys, Wales. It covers five local government communities and elects a councillor to Powys County Council. Description The Yscir with Honddu Isaf and Llanddew ward covers the sparsely populated communities of Honddu Isaf, Llanddew, Merthyr Cynog, Trallong and Yscir, including the valleys of the Nant Brân, Afon Honddu and Afon Ysgir. William Powell (Liberal Democrat Politician)
William "Bill" Powell is a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician. He has been a Powys County Councillor since 2004, and was a member of the Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for the Mid and West Wales Region from 2011 to 2016. Background Powell attended Talgarth Community Primary School and Gwernyfed High School, gaining a scholarship to read Modern Languages (French and German) at Pembroke College, Oxford. He is a qualified teacher and has taught French and German at a number of schools in Wales and the Marches. Latterly, William was Head of German at Hereford Sixth Form College, where he was also the European Officer.
