2017 Papua New Guinea Earthquake
The 2017 Papua New Guinea earthquake was an 7.9 earthquake that struck at 04:30 UTC on 22 January 2017. Impact Damage Damage occurred in Arawa and parts of central Bougainville, while a power outage occurred in Buka. Casualties Two children were killed and another was injured from a landslide, and a 7-year old girl died after she was hit by falling rocks. Another landslide killed two teenagers as well. Fifteen children were injured by falling trees and rocks, while two men were slightly injured by a landslide in Panguna. 2016 Solomon Islands Earthquakes
On 9 December 2016 at 4:38 a.m. ( UTC +11) local time (17:38:46 UTC), the Solomon Islands region was rocked by an 7.8 earthquake, centered 30 km off San Cristobal Island, about 61 km southwest of Kirakira, the capital of Makira-Ulawa Province. Initially registering magnitude 8.0, later downgraded to 7.8, the temblor prompted tsunami warnings that kept countries surrounding the Coral, Tasman and Solomon Sea on high alert, but was later cancelled. A large aftershock of magnitude 6.9 occurred shortly afterwards. This earthquake was largely felt, waking many residents who later ran to high ground for fears of a potential tsunami. The earthquake killed a child and affected some 34,000 people in Makira, South Malaita and Guadalcanal Island where many had lost their homes or had no access to basic needs. Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and north-west of Vanuatu. Panguna
Panguna is a town and a (now decommissioned) copper mine on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. It was owned and operated by Bougainville Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. Beginning operations in 1972, the company hired thousands of workers, most from other parts of the country. By the end of its operations on May 15, 1989, when the mine was closed because of an armed uprising on the island, it was the largest open-pit mine in the world. It was accused of contaminating large areas due to its toxic waste, which affected land, water and air. Resentment against the environmental poisoning and the fact that most profits left the island, were major catalysts in the unrest in Bougainville in the 1970s and 1980s, leading to the Bougainville conflict, which lasted from 1988 until 1998.
