2017 Monaghan Senior Football Championship
The 2017 Monaghan Senior Football Championship was the 111th edition of Monaghan GAA's premier gaelic football tournament for senior clubs in County Monaghan, Ireland. Ten teams competed, with the winner representing Monaghan in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship. The championship began with a back door system for the first two rounds before becoming knock-out. Scotstown were the defending champions after they defeated Clontibret O'Neills in the 2016 final to claim a "2-in-a-row" of S.F.C. titles, and they successfully defended their crown when defeating Magheracloone Mitchel's in this season's final. Donaghmoyne returned to the senior grade after a 1-year absence since being relegated in 2015. Killanny Geraldine's returned to the top flight after a 31-season exodus since relegation in 1985 when claiming the Intermediate Football League in 2016. Monaghan Senior Football Championship
The Monaghan Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by Monaghan GAA clubs. The Monaghan County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Ballybay Pearse Brothers are the title holders (2022) defeating Scotstown in the Final. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Mick Duffy Cup. The winners of the Monaghan Senior Championship qualify to represent the county in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship. Clontibret O'Neills
Clontibret O'Neills Gaelic Athletic Association is a Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Clontibret, County Monaghan, Ireland. History A team existed in the area, named after Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone in 1896. In 1906, variously called Clontibret O'Neills or Doohamlet O'Neills, another team is recorded. The current team is considered to derive from a 1913 affiliation to the Monaghan county board. Clontibret have won 17 county senior titles; their best finish in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship came in 1994, when they reached the final, losing to Bellaghy. Pat McEnaney
Pat McEnaney (born 1960/1961/1962/1963) is a Gaelic footballer and referee from Corduff in County Monaghan. He officiated many high-profile inter-county matches, including four finals of the All-Ireland SFC. Many would rate McEnaney as the best Gaelic football referee of his time. As of 2022, he was continuing to referee. That year, Martin Breheny named him among "five of the best football referees". McEnaney also refereed several International Rules Series tests, as well as games in countries such as France, Luxembourg and the United States. Early and personal life McEnaney attended Referagh School. He plays squash. Playing career As a player, McEnaney won a Monaghan Junior Football Championship and a Monaghan Intermediate Football Championship with Corduff in 1998. Clones ( ; , meaning 'meadow of Eois') is a small town in western County Monaghan, Ireland. The area is part of the Border Region, earmarked for economic development by the Irish Government due to its currently below-average economic situation. The town was badly hit economically by the Partition of Ireland in 1921 because of its location on the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. St Tiernach's Park is the principal GAA stadium of Ulster GAA located in County Monaghan, Ireland. It is used mainly for Gaelic football. Such is its association with the town of Clones ( ), which is located to the south, the venue itself is often referred to simply as Clones. Ballybay Pearse Brothers
Ballybay Pearse Brothers Gaelic Football Club is a Gaelic football club based in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland. History The club was founded as Ballybay GFC in 1906. The club is named after the brothers Patrick Pearse and Willie Pearse, executed after the 1916 Easter Rising. Their grounds, Pearse Park, opened in April 1951, the 35th anniversary of the Rising, and were commonly used for inter-county fixtures. Ballybay won their first senior trophy in 1952 by winning the league (Owen Ward Cup). In 1953 their first championship followed as the team captained by Paddy McKearney beat Donaghmoyne in the county final. A "golden age" followed, Ballybay winning six Monaghan Senior Football Championships in the years 1953-1969.
