2017 MSBL Season
The 2017 MSBL season was the 29th season of the Men's State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 17 March, with round 1 seeing a 2016 grand final rematch between the Cockburn Cougars and Joondalup Wolves. The 2017 MSBL All-Star Game was played on 5 June at Bendat Basketball Centre – the home of basketball in Western Australia. The regular season ended on Saturday 29 July. The finals began on Saturday 5 August and ended on Saturday 2 September, when the Perth Redbacks defeated the Wolves in the MSBL Grand Final. Regular season The regular season began on Friday 17 March and ended on Saturday 29 July after 20 rounds of competition. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. East Perth Eagles
East Perth Eagles is an NBL1 West club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The club is a division of East Perth District Basketball Association (EPDBA), the major administrative basketball organisation in Perth's north eastern suburbs. The Eagles play their home games at Herb Graham Recreation Centre. Club history Background Basketball in East Perth began in 1946 with the formation of the Western Australian Basketball Association. Floreat, Western Australia
Floreat is a residential suburb west-northwest of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is bordered on Underwood Avenue, Selby Street, Cromarty Road and Durston Road. It is the head of the Town of Cambridge, which has its municipal offices and library in the suburb. Stephen Black
Stephen Black (born 5 April 1980) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 11 seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL). He is the son of Alan Black. Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Black attended the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra in 1998 and 1999. He made his debut in the NBL in October 1998, playing his first five seasons with the Perth Wildcats. He joined the Brisbane Bullets in 2003 and then the Cairns Taipans in 2007. He retired in 2009 having played 298 NBL games. His final season in the NBL was cut short by a back injury. In 2010, Black coached the South West Metro Pirates in the Queensland Basketball League. Ray Turner (basketball)
Ray Lee Turner (born January 24, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Mandurah Magic of the NBL1 West. He played college basketball for Texas A&M University before playing professionally in Cyprus, Australia, Japan and Hungary. During his first two years in Australia, Turner won a QBL championship with the Rockhampton Rockets and was named the SBL Most Valuable Player with the Perth Redbacks. Jay Bowie
Julius "Jay" Bowie (born March 25, 1992) is an American professional basketball player who last played for Bali United of the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL). He played college basketball for Marist College before playing professionally in the NBA Development League, Australia and England. High school career Bowie was born in Tampa, Florida. He attended George S. Middleton High School, where he spent his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Tampa Preparatory School in 2008. Jalen Billups
Jalen Billups (born December 21, 1992) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Toyoda Gosei Scorpions of the Japanese B.League. He played five years of college basketball for Northern Kentucky before starting his professional career in Australia with the Cockburn Cougars of the State Basketball League (SBL) in 2017. After a short stint in Scotland with the Glasgow Rocks, he returned to the SBL in 2018 and won the league's MVP as well as guiding the Joondalup Wolves to the SBL Grand Final. Rhys Vague
Rhys Anthony Vague (born 17 January 1996) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Kagawa Five Arrows of the Japanese B.League. He made his debut for his hometown Perth Wildcats in the NBL as a development player in 2014. After four seasons as a development player, he was elevated to a fully contracted player in 2018. Ben Purser
Ben Purser (born 24 February 1990) is an Australian basketball player for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West. He debuted for the Hawks in 2008 in the State Basketball League (SBL) and helped them win an SBL championship in 2018 with grand final MVP honours. He won a second championship with the Hawks in 2021 in the first season of the NBL1 West. Cody Gordon Ellis (born 24 April 1990) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Warwick Senators of the NBL1 West. After four years of college basketball for Saint Louis University, Ellis had a five-year stint in the NBL with the Sydney Kings and Illawarra Hawks. Maurice Barrow
Maurice Barrow (born January 15, 1992) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Fairfield University before playing professionally in Austria and Australia. High school career Barrow attended Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York. As a junior in 2008–09, he led Christ the King to the CHSAA Class AA intersectional championship by tallying a double double in the decisive game.
