2017 America's Cup
The 2017 America's Cup was the 35th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, won by a score of 7 to 1 over the defender, Oracle Team USA. It was held on the Great Sound in Bermuda from June 17 to June 26. The races were conducted using hydrofoiling AC50 America's Cup Class yachts, which are slightly larger than the AC45F yachts used in the 2015–16 America's Cup World Series. It was Oracle's second defence of the America's Cup, four years after its first successful defence. Emirates Team New Zealand defended the cup in the 36th America's Cup. The format was changed since the last Cup, to the current best-of-13. Venue The 2017 America's Cup course was on the Great Sound in Bermuda, the venue at the Royal Naval Dockyard. In June 2014, media reported the venue of the 34th America's Cup, San Francisco, was no longer in consideration to host the 35th edition. David Saul
David John Saul (Warwick, 27 November 1939 – Devonshire, 15 May 2017) was a Bermudian politician who was the Premier of Bermuda from 1995 to 1997. Political career Having finished his career in business David Saul was elected in 1989 from the United Bermuda Party (UBP) and soon after became a Minister of Finance at the government of John Swan. In 1995 the latter appointed him as his successor at the head of United Bermuda Party and government. Saul was the fifth premier of Bermuda from 25 August 1995 to 27 March 1997, and his main task was negotiations with the British government of John Major about receiving British citizenship for the inhabitants of Bermuda. However, during Saul's tenure, UBP divided in two parts. One part supported the former Premier John Swan, who wanted to bring the franchise of McDonald's restaurants he owned to Bermuda. General elections were held in Bermuda on 18 July 2017 to elect all 36 members to the House of Assembly of Bermuda, House of Assembly. Great Sound
The Great Sound is large ocean inlet (a sound) located in Bermuda. It may be the submerged remains of a Pre-Holocene volcanic caldera. Other geologists dispute the origin of the Bermuda Pedestal as a volcanic hotspot. Geography The Great Sound dominates the southwest of the island chain and forms a natural harbour. It is surrounded on all sides by islands, except for the northeast, where it is open to the Atlantic Ocean. Peninsulas To the south, two small peninsulas jut into the sound separating it from the smaller Little Sound. In the east, the Great Sound narrows to form Hamilton Harbour. Same-sex Marriage In Bermuda
Same-sex marriage in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, is currently not recognised nor performed but it was legal between 2017 and 2022. However, marriages performed during that period remain valid. Same-sex marriage first became legal on 5 May 2017, when the Supreme Court of Bermuda declared that same-sex couples had a legal right to marry in the territory after a couple filed suit against the Bermudian Government. However, a bill to ban same-sex marriage and establish domestic partnerships was passed by the Parliament in December 2017 and went into effect on 1 June 2018 though same-sex marriages performed before that day remained legally recognised. In response to the renewed ban on same-sex marriage, two legal challenges were filed opposing the domestic partnership law. Edward David Burt
Edward David Burt (born 23 November 1978) is the Premier of Bermuda and leader of the Progressive Labour Party (PLP). Burt is Bermuda's youngest ever premier, having taken office at the age of 38. Early life and career His mother, Merlin, is from Jamaica, while his father, Gerald, is Bermudian. He is married to Kristin and has two children, Nia and Edward. Burt attended the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., double majoring in finance and information systems and attaining a master's degree in information systems development. During his time at GW, he served as president of the George Washington University Student Association. He attained a Project Management Professional certification in 2009. Michael Dunkley
Michael Henry Dunkley, JP, MP (born June 18, 1957) is a Bermudian politician and businessman who served as the 12th Premier of Bermuda from 2014 to 2017. He was an MP and member general of the One Bermuda Alliance political party and an active businessman on the island. Dunkley served as Premier of Bermuda until his party, the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), was defeated in a landslide victory for the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) on 18 July 2017.
