2016 Welsh Liberal Democrats Leadership Election
The 2016 Welsh Liberal Democrats leadership election took place following the resignation of Kirsty Williams following the 2016 National Assembly for Wales election, 2016 elections to the Welsh Assembly where the Welsh Liberal Democrats fell from five seats to one. Kirsty Williams resigned on 6 May 2016 with Mark Williams being appointed acting leader that evening before being confirmed as leader by the party's National Executive Committee the following day. Williams went on to serve as leader for a little over a year until his resignation in June 2017. 2008 Welsh Liberal Democrats Leadership Election
The 2008 Welsh Liberal Democrats leadership election took place in the autumn of 2008 following the resignation of Mike German. Two Assembly Members contested the leadership Jenny Randerson and Kirsty Williams. Kirsty Williams won the contest with 59.8% of the vote and was declared leader on 8 December 2008, who became the first female party leader in Wales. Election rules The Welsh Liberal Democrats had reviewed their leadership rules during their 2007 Autumn Conference in Aberystwyth and during their 2008 Autumn Conference in Clydach. To stand for leader candidates needed to be an elected member of The National Assembly for Wales and have the support of 10% of AMs (i.e. one other colleague). 2017 Welsh Liberal Democrats Leadership Election
The Welsh Liberal Democrats leadership election took place during the autumn of 2017 and was won by Jane Dodds, who defeated Ceredigion Councillor Elizabeth Evans in a closely fought contest. Following the 2017 United Kingdom general election, 2017 general election the party's leader, and only MP, Mark Williams (politician), Mark Williams lost his Ceredigion (UK Parliament constituency), Ceredigion seat by 104 votes. Because of this he stood down as leader later that day. His predecessor as leader, Kirsty Williams, took over as interim leader, but announced she wouldn't be a candidate in the forthcoming leadership election. Mark Williams (politician)
Mark Fraser Williams (born 24 March 1966) is a British politician, who was the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats from 2016 to 2017. He is a former Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ceredigion (UK Parliament constituency), Ceredigion constituency, between 2005 United Kingdom general election, 2005 and 2017 United Kingdom general election, 2017. He sat on the Welsh Affairs Select Committee, and in 2006 he became a Shadow Minister for Wales under Menzies Campbell. Williams is a graduate of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the University of Plymouth, and is now Headteacher of a school in Llangorse near Brecon. Kirsty Williams
Victoria Kirstyn Williams (born 19 March 1971) is a Welsh politician who served as Minister for Education in the Welsh Government from 2016 to 2021. She was a Member of the Senedd (MS) from 1999 to 2021. She previously served as the Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats from December 2008 to May 2016 and subsequently from June 2017 to November 2017 in an acting capacity. Early and personal life Williams was born in Taunton, Somerset to Welsh parents, whilst her librarian father was working there. After moving to Liverpool, in 1974 the family moved to the village of Bynea, Carmarthenshire, where she grew up. The Welsh Liberal Democrats ( cy, Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol Cymru) are a branch of the United Kingdom Liberal Democrats that operates in Wales. The party is led by Jane Dodds, who served as MP for Brecon and Radnorshire from August to December 2019, and MS for Mid and West Wales since May 2021. The party currently has 1 elected member in the Senedd and no Welsh seats in the UK House of Commons, but does have several members of the House of Lords.
