2016 Valenzuela Local Elections
Local elections was held in Valenzuela on May 9, 2016 within the Philippine general election. The voters elected for the elective local posts in the city: the mayor, vice mayor, the two Congressmen (or district representatives), and the councilors, six in each of the city's two legislative districts. Incumbent mayor Rexlon Gatchalian of Nationalist People's Coalition won for his second term. Gatchalian's primary opponent is Magtanggol Gunigundo of the Liberal Party, who was on his third term and term limited as representative to the city's second congressional district since 2007. The mayor of Valenzuela ( fil, Punong Lungsod ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela), a highly urbanized city in northern Metro Manila, Philippines, is the official head and chief executive of Valenzuela. He leads on enforcing city ordinances and improving public services. The mayor has a term of office of three years, but has a maximum electoral tenure of three consecutive terms. Inaugural holder of the office was Pío Valenzuela (1869–1956), served from 1899 to 1901, whom the city received its name. The Senate of the Philippines (Filipino: ''Senado ng Pilipinas'', also ''Mataas na Kapulungan ng Pilipinas'' or "upper chamber") is the upper house of Congress of the bicameral legislature of the Philippines with the House of Representatives as the lower house. Sangguniang Kabataan
Sangguniang Kabataan (abbreviated as SK; ) is a council meant to represent the youth in each barangay in the Philippines. It was put "on hold", but not quite abolished, prior to the 2013 barangay elections. In January 2016, the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act was signed into law which made some significant changes to the SK and initially scheduled new elections for October 2016. In March 2017, the elections were postponed anew to May 2018. The SK Chairman leads the Sangguniang Kabataan. A Local Youth Development Council (LYDC) composed of representatives of different local youth groups supports the SK and its programs. The Sangguniang Kabataan is the successor of the Kabataang Barangay (KB; ) which was abolished by the Local Government Code of 1991. The 2016 election of members to the Senate of the Philippines was the 32nd election of members to the Senate of the Philippines.
