2016 Sheffield City Council Election
Sheffield City Council elections took place on Thursday 5 May 2016, alongside nationwide local elections. All 84 seats were up for election, 3 per ward, after several electoral boundaries were changed. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party contested all 84 seats. The Conservatives fielded 55 candidates, UKIP 43, TUSC 23 and Yorkshire First 1. There was also 1 independent candidate. Voters in the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough Parliamentary constituency also elected Gill Furniss MP, in a by-election triggered by the death of her husband Harry Harpham MP. 2016 Sheffield Brightside And Hillsborough By-election
The Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election was a UK parliamentary by-election in the constituency of Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough in South Yorkshire. It was caused by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) Harry Harpham on 4 February 2016. Harpham had been the Labour Party MP for the seat since the 2015 general election. The by-election took place on 5 May 2016, the same day as local elections in the United Kingdom. Candidates Sheffield City Council published the statement of persons nominated on 8 April 2016. This showed that seven candidates would contest the by-election. The Labour candidate was Gill Furniss, a Sheffield city councillor and the widow of Harry Harpham. UKIP's candidate was Steven Winstone, a local metal trader and businessman. He focused his campaign on protecting jobs in the local steel industry. Olivia Frances Blake (born 10 March 1990) is a British Labour politician. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Hallam at the 2019 general election. Julie Dore
Julie Dore is a British Labour Party politician, who was Leader of Sheffield City Council from May 2011 until January 2021, on which she represents Arbourthorne. She has been a member of Sheffield City Council since she was elected to the predecessor Park Ward in a by-election in October 2000. In 2008 she became Chair of a Council Scrutiny Board, and in May 2010 she joined the Shadow Cabinet. On 11 February 2020 Dore announced that she would not contest her seat at the upcoming local elections in May, and would stand down as leader of the council. Shaffaq Mohammed (born 21 July 1972) is a British politician who served as a Liberal Democrats Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Yorkshire and the Humber from 2019 to 2020. Angela Christine Smith (born 16 August 1961) is a British former politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Penistone and Stocksbridge from 2010 to 2019 and MP for Sheffield Hillsborough from 2005 to 2010. Magid Magid (, born 26 June 1989), also known as Magid Mah and Magic Magid, is a Somali-British activist and politician who served as the Lord Mayor of Sheffield from May 2018 to May 2019.
