2014 Sheffield City Council Election
Sheffield City Council elections took place on May 22, 2014, alongside nationwide local elections and European elections. There were 29 seats up for election, one third of the council with a double vacancy in Walkley. With a Labour majority of 36 and defending 19 seats, it was almost mathematically impossible for Labour to lose control of the council, as they would have needed to lose all 19 of those 19 seats to lose control. Even then, Labour would still have been the largest party. Election result The Labour Party gained one seat from their position following the 2010 election, but this included a seat already gained from the Liberal Democrats via defection in Walkley. Furthermore, another seat already gained from the Liberal Democrats via defection in Beauchief & Greenhill was regained by the Liberal Democrats. Sheffield City Council elections took place on Thursday 5 May 2016, alongside nationwide local elections. All 84 seats were up for election, 3 per ward, after several electoral boundaries were changed. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party contested all 84 seats. The Conservatives fielded 55 candidates, UKIP 43, TUSC 23 and Yorkshire First 1. There was also 1 independent candidate. Voters in the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough Parliamentary constituency also elected Gill Furniss MP, in a by-election triggered by the death of her husband Harry Harpham MP. Sheffield City Council
Sheffield City Council is the city council for the metropolitan borough of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It consists of 84 councillors, elected to represent 28 wards, each with three councillors. It is currently under No Overall Control, with Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party each holding chair positions in a proportionate number of committees, with Labour chairing four Committees, the Liberal Democrats chairing three and the Greens chairing two. History The council was founded as the Corporation of Sheffield in 1843, when Sheffield was incorporated (see History of Sheffield). 2015 United Kingdom General Election
The 2015 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 7 May 2015 to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. It was the first and only general election held at the end of a Parliament under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011. Local elections took place in most areas on the same day. Polls and commentators had predicted the outcome would be too close to call and would result in a second consecutive hung parliament whose composition would be either similar to or more complicated than the 2010 general election. Opinion polls were eventually proven to have underestimated the Conservative vote as the party, having governed in coalition with the Liberal Democrats since 2010, won 330 seats and 36.9% of the vote share, giving them a small overall majority of 12 seats (including Speaker John Bercow—ten seats without him) and their first outright win since 1992. Angela Smith (South Yorkshire Politician)
Angela Christine Smith (born 16 August 1961) is a British former politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Penistone and Stocksbridge from 2010 to 2019 and MP for Sheffield Hillsborough from 2005 to 2010. A member of the Liberal Democrats, she was previously an MP for the Labour Party and Change UK. She was also an Independent politician before joining the Liberal Democrats. Smith was an early critic of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, backing a no-confidence vote in 2016; in part due to this position, she lost a no-confidence motion in her constituency. She resigned from Labour in February 2019 alongside six other MPs in protest at Corbyn's leadership, and they formed the Independent Group, later Change UK. Shaffaq Mohammed
Shaffaq Mohammed (born 21 July 1972) is a British politician who served as a Liberal Democrats Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Yorkshire and the Humber from 2019 to 2020. Early life Shaffaq Mohammed was born in Pakistani administered Kashmir. In April of 1977 he moved to Sheffield and studied at Park House school and later on in life graduated from the University of Sheffield. Political career Sheffield City Council Between 2004 and 2014 Mohammed served as the Liberal Democrat councillor for Broomhill Ward. He contested Crookes Ward in 2014 and was defeated. He returned as a councillor for Ecclesall Ward in 2016 and was re-elected in 2018. Mohammed was elected as leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council in May 2011. Olivia Frances Blake (born 10 March 1990) is a British Labour politician. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Hallam at the 2019 general election. Sheffield City Council elections usually take place by thirds, three years out of every four. Sheffield City Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. Each of Sheffield's 28 wards is represented by three positions on the council, meaning there are usually 28 seats contested in each local election. 1967, 1973, 2004 and 2016 saw new ward boundaries and therefore all seats were contested.
