2016 Oman Super Cup
The 2016 Oman Super Cup was the 14th edition of the Oman Super Cup, an annual football match between Fanja SC, the champions of the 2015-16 Oman Professional League and Saham Club the winners of the 2015-16 Sultan Qaboos Cup. The match was played at the Al-Seeb Stadium in Al-Seeb, Oman. On 8 September 2016, Saham claimed their Super Cup title after securing a 1-0 win over Fanja. Their new signing Badar Al-Jabri struck in the second half to secure a thrilling 1-0 win over the defending Oman Professional League champions in the opening game of the 2016-17 Omani football season. The Oman Super Cup ( ar, كأس السوبر العماني) is an Omani football cup competition. It was first held in 1999, but has been played on and off since its inception. Fanja Sports Club ( ar, نادي فنجاء الرياضي; also known locally as ''Al-Malik'', or "The King" because of their great success, or just plainly as Fanja) is an Omani sports club based in Fanja, Oman. The club is currently playing in the Oman Professional League, top division of Oman Football Association. Their home ground is Al-Seeb Stadium. The stadium is government owned, but they also own their own personal stadium and sports equipment, as well as their own training facilities. History Fanja SC was founded in 1970 and registered in the very next year in 1971. The club has an illustrious history with a total of eight Omani League titles to their name. The club's best years were in the 1970s and the 1980s, but the death of the club owner HRH Sayyid Sami adversely affected the club and after that for the next 20 years, Fanja failed to receive even one trophy. Saham Club ( ar, نادي صحم) is an Omani sports club based in Saham, Oman. The club is currently playing in the Oman Professional League, top division of Oman Football Association. Their home stadium is Sohar Regional Sports Complex. The stadium is government owned, but they also own their own personal stadium and sports equipments, as well as their own training facilities. History The club was founded on 24 April 1972 and registered on 26 June 2002. The club was promoted to the Omani League after winning the final of 2007-08 First Division League, where the club defeated Al-Shabab Club on penalties. The club caused a major upset when they beat 7-time Sultan Qaboos Cup winners, Dhofar in 2009, receiving their first ever Sultan Qaboos Cup title. Al-Seeb Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Seeb, Oman, Seeb, Oman. It is currently used mostly for football (soccer), football matches and is the home stadium of Al-Seeb Club. Al-Seeb, As Seeb or As Sib ( ar, السيب) is a coastal fishing city, located several kilometres northwest of Muscat, in northeastern Oman. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 470,878. The Oman Professional League ( ar, دوري المحترفين عمان; known as the ''Omantel Professional League'' for sponsorship reasons), previously known as the Omantel Elite League, is the top division of the Oman Football Association, and was officially created in 1976. Currently the most successful team in the league is Dhofar with a total of eleven titles to their name. Evolution to a professional league In 2010, during the annual draw for the Sultan Qaboos Cup, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Sultan of Oman, granted the OFA an annual 2.6 million rial (approximately 6.7 million dollars) till the year 2015 to further boost the development of the league. It was founded in 1978, has been a member of the Asian Football Confederation and of FIFA since 1980. History The first football club of the Sultanate (documented as such) was the Maqboul Club, founded in 1942, known today as the Oman Club.
