2016 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship
The 2016 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship was the inaugural Oceania Championship for women's rugby in the region. It was held in Suva on November 5. It was part of the 2017 Rugby World Cup qualifying process. Teams Three teams initially nominated for the tournament were Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Samoa. With their long history of World Cup participation, Samoa seemed to be favourites to become the region's entry. However, in a surprise move, Oceania Rugby refused Samoa's participation on the same grounds as World Rugby had barred Kenya and Uganda from African regional qualification – the lack of a robust domestic women’s fifteens rugby tournament (almost all of Samoa’s squads in past years had come from players living and playing in New Zealand and Australia). 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup Qualifying
The qualification process for the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup began on 14 February 2015. Twelve teams qualified for the tournament, which was held in Ireland in 2017. Qualification process Following the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup, seven teams received an automatic qualification berth - these berths being given to the top seven teams (England, Canada, France, Ireland, New Zealand, the United States and Australia). The remaining five berths for the 2017 finals were awarded through regional tournaments. The non-automatic qualification process began on 14 February 2015. Litiana Lawedrau
Litiana Lawedrau (born 9 October 1992) is a Fijian rugby union player. Lawedrau made her Fijiana XV's debut against Papua New Guinea at the 2016 Oceania Championship on the 5th of November in Suva, Fiji. She scored the first try in the 19th minute of the first half. She later played in the repechage match against Hong Kong to qualify for the 2017 Rugby World Cup. In 2022, Lawedrau was named in the Fijiana Drua squad for Super W. She made the starting line-up for the Drua's debut in the competition, they played against the Melbourne Rebels The Melbourne Rebels is an Australian professional rugby union team based in Melbourne. Seremaia Bai
Seremaia Baïkeinuku (born 4 January 1979) is a retired Fijian rugby union player who played most recently for Leicester Tigers in the Aviva Premiership, and represented Fiji at a National level. He plays at both Fly-half and Inside Centre. Career Seremaia Bai finished his career playing for Leicester Tigers after joining them in 2014. He previously played for Castres Olympique and ASM Clermont Auvergne who both compete in France's Top 14 competition. He also plays for the Fiji national team and the Pacific Islanders. He has played under-19s, under 21s and under 23s for the Fiji national side. Bai attended Lelean Memorial School in Nausori, Fiji. He made his international debut for Fiji in 2000 in a match against Japan which Fiji won 47–22. That year he was also capped against Samoa, the USA, Canada and Italy. Joma Rubuti (born 9 February 1991) is a Fijian rugby union player. Biography Rubuti made her international debut against Papua New Guinea at the 2016 Oceania Championship in Suva. In 2022, Rubuti was named in the Fijiana Drua squad for Super W. She was a reserve in the Drua's Super W debut match against the Melbourne Rebels. She started against the Queensland Reds in round 2 and featured against the Western Force in round 3 of the Super W.
