2016 Laois Senior Football Championship
The 2016 Laois Senior Football Championship is the 126th edition of the Laois GAA's premier club Gaelic football tournament for senior graded teams in County Laois, Ireland. The tournament consists of 16 teams with the winner going on to represent Laois in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship. The championship has a back-door format for the first two rounds before proceeding to a knock-out format. Generally, any team to lose two matches will be knocked out of the championship. Portlaoise were the defending champions after they defeated Emo in the previous years final after a replay. However they lost their crown in the final this season when losing to Stradbally when a last gap goal handed them a 2-10 to 1-12 victory in O'Moore Park. This marked Stradbally's first S.F.C. title in 11 years and their 18th overall. This was Clonaslee–St Manman's return to the senior grade after a three-year exodus since being relegated in 2012. Laois Senior Football Championship
The Laois Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Portarlington are the title holders (2022) defeating O'Dempsey's in the Final. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Jack Delaney Cup. The winners of the Laois Senior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship. They often do well outside the county, with the likes of Portlaoise (1971, 1976, 1982, 1987, 2004, 2009) among the clubs from Laois to win at least one Leinster Championship after winning the Laois Senior Football Championship. O'Dempsey's GAA
O'Dempsey's GAA is a Gaelic football club located in the northeast of County Laois, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1951, won the Laois Junior Football Championship title in that same year and followed up by winning the Laois Intermediate Football Championship title the following year. The club name refers to the Ó Díomasaigh (O'Dempsey) family, the ancient Gaelic rulers of the Clann Mhaolughra (Clanmaliere) region, incorporating Portnahinch and Upper Philipstown on both sides of the River Barrow. O'Dempsey's went on to win two Laois Senior Football Championship titles in 1963 and 1980. Portarlington, County Laois
Portarlington, historically called Cooletoodera (from ), is a town on the border of County Laois and County Offaly, Ireland. The River Barrow forms the border. The town was recorded in the 2016 census as having a population of 8,368. History Portarlington was founded in 1666, by Sir Henry Bennet, who had been Home Secretary to Charles II and to whom that King, on his restoration, had made a grant of the extensive estates of Ó Díomasaigh, Viscount Clanmalier, confiscated after the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Courtwood GAA
Courtwood GAA ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coill na Cúirte) is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club, located in the north east corner of County Laois in Ireland. The club is located in the eastern half of Emo parish with a small catchment area south of the village of Ballybrittas and mainly covered by the local school Rath NS. The locality is bordered on one side by County Kildare and by three neighbouring clubs in Laois: Annanough, O'Dempsey's and Emo. At adult level, the club is a football club only, although a period in the 2000s saw Courtwood dabble in the small ball game. Courtwood currently field football teams at senior and junior C. Eddie Kinsella
Eddie Kinsella is a former Gaelic football referee from County Laois. He is a member of the Courtwood club. Kinsella refereed the 2014 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final between Donegal and Kerry at Croke Park. Arles–Kilcruise GAA Gaelic Athletic Association Club is a gaelic football club in County Laois, Republic of Ireland. Founded in October 1960, the club colours are maroon and white. The club won its only Laois Senior Football Championship title to date in 2003 under the captaincy of Paudge Conway. Crettyard GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in Crettyard near Newtown in County Laois, Ireland. The club is located near the Laois-Kilkenny border. History Shortly after the GAA was founded in 1884, there were two clubs in the area: Mayo "Die Hards" and Newtown "sons of Erin". According to ''The Nationalist and Leinster Times'', Newtown played a football game against Modubeagh in 1888, Mayo also played a match against Modubeagh in the Arles club tournament in 1889. An R.I.C. special branch report on the G.A.A. in Queens County in 1890, stated that the Mayo and Newtown clubs were both affiliated. Ballylinan GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club in Ballylinan, County Laois, Ireland. The club was founded in 1926 and has colours of green and gold. Ballylinan Gaelic Athletic Association Club has been a central part of village life since it was founded in 1926. The club is a senior club which provides Gaelic football to all age groups from under six to adult. The club also formerly competed in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship. Arles–Killeen GAA is a Gaelic football club in County Laois, Ireland. Founded in 1961 the club colours are white with black trim. The club has won 3 Laois Intermediate Football Championships and in 2006 reached the Laois Senior Football Championship final where they were beaten by Ballyroan Gaels. Ballyroan Abbey GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in County Laois, Ireland. History The original Ballyroan GAA club was founded in 1887. The club colours were originally royal blue with a dominant white V on the front, later being changed to sky blue and navy. The Ballyroan GAA club won eight Laois Senior Football Championship titles in its own right, the most recent of which was in 1992. Ballyroan Gaels was a temporary amalgamation of the two neighbouring clubs, Abbeyleix and Ballyroan. This amalgamation was made permanent in 2007, when they became known as Ballyroan Abbey GAA. St Joseph's GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It won nine Laois Senior Football Championship titles between 1973 and 2000. The club colours are yellow with blue trim and the main club grounds are located at Kellyville with a secondary grounds at Milltown.
