The 2016 Badminton Asia Championships was the 35th edition of the Badminton Asia Championships. It was held in Wuhan, China, from April 26 to May 1. Badminton Asia Championships
The Badminton Asia Championships (formerly Asian Badminton Championships until 2006) is a tournament organized by governing body Badminton Asia to crown the best badminton players in Asia. The tournament started in 1962 and is held annually since 1991. The event had rotated between team and individual competitions before the team event became null since 1994. At the 2003 event however, there is a controversy when China decided to pull out from the tournament at the last minute. Head coach Li Yongbo said that the tournament did not award any ranking points for the 2004 Summer Olympics event and wanted to give his players more time to rest. Some of the top players were also willing to pull out from the tournament since the competitiveness of the event was low. Liu Yuchen
Liu Yuchen (, born 25 July 1995) is a Chinese badminton player. He was the men's doubles World Champion in 2018, two-time Asian Champion in 2017 and 2018, and also a silver medalist at the 2020 Summer Olympics partnered with Li Junhui. Liu was part of the national team that won the 2018 Asian Games, 2018 Thomas Cup, and 2019 Sudirman Cup. Zhao Yunlei
Zhao Yunlei (born 25 August 1986) is a mixed and women's doubles badminton player from China. She graduated with a BA from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. She is the first and only badminton player to have ever won two gold medals in the same Olympic edition, winning in both the mixed and women's doubles categories in 2012. Zhao joins the ranks with nine other players with two Olympic gold medals, the highest number of gold medals won by any badminton player. Through her performance at the 2014 and 2015 BWF World Championships, she became the first player to win two consecutive gold medals in two consecutive BWF World Championships. Greysia Polii
Greysia Polii (; born 11 August 1987) is an Indonesian former badminton player specializing in doubles. She won gold medals in the women's doubles at the 2014 Asian Games, at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She also won three bronze medals at the World Championships in 2015, 2018, and 2019. Polii is a member of BWF Athletes' Commission to represent the needs and views of athletes to the BWF council and committees from 2013 to 2017 and 2021 to 2025. Having started her career at the Jaya Raya in Jakarta, she later was selected to join the national team in 2003. Polii represented her country in the 2012, 2016 and at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Nitya Krishinda Maheswari
Nitya Krishinda Maheswari Korwa (born 16 December 1988) is an Indonesian former badminton player affiliated with Jaya Raya Jakarta, specializing in doubles event. She won the women's doubles gold medals at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games and at the 2014 Asian Games. Career Maheswari participated at the 2009 World Championships, where she reached rank 9 in the women's doubles together with Greysia Polii. In 2011, she won the gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games with Anneke Feinya Agustin. She also won the women's doubles gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games with Polii. Lee So-hee
Lee So-hee (Hangul: 이소희; ; born 14 June 1994) is a South Korean badminton player. She won the women's doubles title at the 2017 All England Open tournament. She also helped the Korean national team to win the world team championships at the 2017 Sudirman Cup. She reached a career high of world no. 2 in the women's doubles in November 2017 partnered with Chang Ye-na. For her achievements in 2017, Lee who affiliated with the Incheon International Airport team, was awarded as the best player of the year by the Badminton Korea Association. Chang Ye-na (; ; born 13 December 1989) is a South Korean badminton player who specializes in doubles. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. is a Japanese badminton player. Career In 2009 and 2010 she became the semifinalist of the Osaka International tournament in women's doubles event. In 2010, she became the runner-up of the Austrian International tournament partnered with Minatsu Mitani. She also became the semifinalist at the Russian Open tournament in women's singles and doubles event. Ayaka Takahashi
is a retired Japanese badminton player who was affiliated with Unisys badminton team. She is an Olympic Games gold medalist, two-time Asian Champion, two-time Asian Games silver medalist, and World Championship bronze medalist. Playing for the Unisys team with her regular partner Misaki Matsutomo in the women's doubles, she won five National Championships titles. Misaki Matsutomo
is a Japanese badminton player who is a doubles specialist. She won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympic women's doubles alongside Ayaka Takahashi. Despite playing doubles, she was also a finalist in girls' singles at the 2010 BWF World Junior Championships in Mexico. Zhang Nan (; born 1 March 1990) is a Chinese badminton player who specializes in both men's and mixed doubles. He found much success in mixed doubles with his former partner Zhao Yunlei.
