The 2015 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships were held at the Thialf ice skating rink in Heerenveen from Friday 31 October 2014 to Sunday 2 November 2014. Although the tournament was held in 2014 it was the 2015 edition as it is part of the 2014–2015 speed skating season. Thialf
Thialf is an ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Thialf consists of the Thialf-hal (a 12,500-capacity speed skating venue) and the Elfstedenhal (a 2,500-capacity ice hockey venue). Thialf is used for long track speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice speedway, and non-sporting events. The outdoor rink was opened in 1967, and the indoor stadium was opened in 1986. Several world records have been set in the indoor stadium. Annually, Thialf hosts two Speed Skating World Cup events. Jan de Jong was the ice rink master at Thialf for many years. History Thialf is named after Thialfi, a character in Norse mythology, who was Thor's servant and had to race a giant. Construction on the artificial outdoor ice rink was started in 1966, and it was opened on 14 October 1967 by Princess Christina of the Netherlands. Jorrit Bergsma
Jacob Jorrit Bergsma (; born 1 February 1986) is a Dutch speed skater and marathon skater. At the 2014 Winter Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10,000 m. His coach is Jillert Anema. Biography Bergsma has been skating for the BAM team since the 2010–11 season. On 10 October 2009 he won his first skating match (the Marathon), the DSB Bank Cup. During the 2009–10 season, he tried to qualify for the Olympic Games for Kazakhstan. During the national championships in the Russian Chelyabinsk, Bergsma won the 5000 m in 6:28.21 and qualified for the World Cup. The ISU refused to let the Dutch Kazakh start, and Bergsma decided to end his Kazakh adventure. Later in the season he won the Alternatieve Elfstedentocht in Austria. Irene Karlijn (Ireen) Wüst (; born 1 April 1986) is a Dutch former long track speed skater. Wüst became the most successful speed skating olympian ever by achieving at least one gold medal in each of five consecutive Winter Olympic appearances and is the only athlete to win an individual gold medal in five consecutive Olympics, Summer or Winter. Marrit Leenstra (speed Skater)
Marrit Leenstra (; born 10 May 1989) is a Dutch former long track speed skater. Skating career In the 2007 season she made her World Cup debut in Moscow. In the 2008 season she skated a junior world record in the 1500 meters at the World Cup in Salt Lake City. Later this season she qualified for the European Championships and ranked 6th after all four distances. With this result she qualified for the World Allround. At the World Allround Championships in Berlin she placed 12th after four distances. In February 2008, Leenstra was crowned the World Junior Speed Skating Champion in Changchun, China. Thijsje Oenema
Thijsje Oenema (born 6 June 1988) is a Dutch speed skater and "short-track sprinter". She is specialised on the short distances. Oenema skates for the VPZ skating team and is a member for skating club S.T.D. Sint Nicolaasga. Her breakthrough was during the 2009 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships, winning the bronze medal at the 500 m. Margot Boer
Margot Madelaine Boer (born 7 August 1985) is a Dutch former speed skater. She specialised in the 500, 1000 and 1500 m. Sports career After spending a few years at local teams in the South Holland area, Boer was seen as one of the Netherlands main future talents and was offered a contract at the KNSB youth development team for the 2006–07 season. In the years before she already participated in several World Cup meetings. Her first success in her new team was winning a gold medal in the 500 m at the 2007 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships. The women's 500 meter at the 2015 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships took place in Heerenveen at the Thialf ice skating rink on Saturday 1 November 2014. Although this edition was held in 2014, it was part of the 2014–2015 speed skating season.
