2015 Clifford Cup
The 80th Clifford Cup tournament was held between the 20 and 29 March 2015. Seedings The seeding is based upon the teams standings at the end of the 2014-15 Dialog Rugby League season. Last year's cup holder, Navy SC, even though they won twelve matches narrowly lost the league by percentage to Kandy SC, who won eleven games. As Colombo Hockey and Football Club and the Hambantota Sharks both withdrew from the league competition midway through the season the second-round games were played only between seven teams. A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Hambantota Sharks
Hambantota Sharks Sports Club was a former Division 'A' rugby union team based in Sri Lanka, that competed in the Dialog Rugby League. The Hambantota Sharks Sports Club was launched on 15 May 2013 at Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo. The President of the club is Johan Fernado, whilst the coach was announced as Nihal Gunaratne. K. D. U. Adventures (Pvt Ltd) are the major sponsor of the club, with their home games to be played at Beliatta National Stadium. The Hambantota Sharks first official scheduled game in the Dialog Rugby League was to occur at Havelock Park, against the league titleholders, Havelock Sports Club however it was abandoned due to a power failure at the grounds. Their debut match was held on 24 November 2013 against Air Force SC at the newly constructed Beliatta National Stadium. The game ended in a 13-13 draw. Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club are a Division 'A' rugby union team, based in Sri Lanka. It is the rugby union team of the Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club. In 1961 Air Force SC together with Division 'B' teams from Police SC, Army SC, Navy SC and University were permitted to play alongside the Division 'A' clubs, Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club, Colombo Hockey and Football Club, Havelock SC, Kandy SC, Dimbulla Athletic & Cricket Club, Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club, Uva and Kelani Valley Club in the Clifford Cup competition, which was changed whereby all thirteen clubs had to play each other once on a home-and-away basis in alternate years, and at the end of the season the best eight teams went on to play in a knock-out tournament for the Clifford Cup. Havelock Sports Club
Havelock Sports Club is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Sri Lanka that plays in the Dialog Rugby League. The club has a long history and Rugby is the club's main sporting activity. The "Havies", as they are commonly known amongst its members, is situated in Colombo and the club's ground is known as Havelock Park. The club has produced some excellent players over the last few decades including Sri Lankan Nationals such as Michael Jayasekera, Hisham Abdeen, Graham Raux, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and Rajeev Ganapathy. Colombo Racecourse
Colombo Racecourse ( si, කොළඹ තුරඟ තරඟ පිටිය) is a historical harness racing course in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. During the Second World War, it was used as a temporary airfield. In 2012, it was redeveloped as the Colombo Racecourse Sports Complex to become the first International Rugby Union ground in Sri Lanka to host all the national rugby union side's home matches. Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club, also known as CR & FC, is a Division-A rugby union team based in Colombo, Sri Lanka which plays in the Dialog Rugby League. Established in 1922, the club has won the Clifford Cup Knockout Tournament fifteen times, most recently in 2023. Their nickname is the Red Shirts. History The club was founded on 25 September 1922 by Colonel Ernest Henley Joseph. It was the first rugby-only sporting organisation in the country at the time. Colombo Hockey and Football Club (also known as CH & FC) is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Colombo, Sri Lanka that competes in the Dialog Rugby League in Sri Lanka. History The Colombo Football Club was established in 1879, playing their first match against a 'World' Team on 30 June that year. The Colombo Hockey was established in 1892.
