2014 Wythenshawe And Sale East By-election
The Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election was a by-election held on 13 February 2014 for the Parliament of the United Kingdom's House of Commons constituency of Wythenshawe and Sale East, following the death of the former MP, Paul Goggins. The election was won by Mike Kane of the Labour Party with a greatly increased share of the vote compared with the 2010 general election. UKIP, which had previously performed poorly, came second, beating the Conservative Party into third place. The Liberal Democrats lost their deposit. The turnout was 28.2%, compared with 54.3% for the 2010 general election. Background On 30 December 2013, Goggins became seriously ill after collapsing while running. He died in hospital on 7 January 2014 following complications from a brain haemorrhage. Wythenshawe And Sale East (UK Parliament Constituency)
Wythenshawe and Sale East is a parliamentary constituency in the city of Manchester and the borough of Trafford. It returns one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post system. The constituency has always been a safe Labour seat, and the southern part of the constituency includes Manchester Airport. The current MP is Mike Kane of the Labour Party who was elected at the 2014 by-election in February 2014. He succeeded Labour's Paul Goggins who died in January 2014, and who had held the seat since its inception in 1997. UK Independence Party
The UK Independence Party (UKIP; ) is a Eurosceptic, right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom. The Manchester Central by-election was a by-election for the House of Commons constituency of Manchester Central held on Thursday 15 November 2012. Lucy Powell of the Labour Party won with 69% of the vote (it has historically been a safe Labour seat), with the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives losing significant numbers of votes compared with the 2010 general election (with the Conservatives losing their deposit). In terms of loss of share of the vote it was the Lib Dems' worst result in a parliamentary by-election since the Second World War. There was an unusually low turnout of just 18.2%, the lowest in a Parliamentary by-election since the War. Salford City Council is the local authority of the City of Salford in Greater Manchester, England. It is a metropolitan borough council, one of ten in Greater Manchester and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in Salford.
