2014 Portland Thunder Season
The Portland Thunder season was the inaugural season for the franchise in the Arena Football League. The team was coached by Matthew Sauk and played its home games at the Moda Center. With a 5–13 record in the regular season, the Thunder qualified for the playoffs. However, they were defeated in the conference semifinals by the Arizona Rattlers by a 52–48 score. Matthew Sauk
Matthew Sauk (born March 15, 1976) is an arena football coach and former quarterback. He played college football at Utah State, was an af2 quarterback from 2001 to 2005, and an AFL quarterback from 2002 to 2008. He has been a football coach since 2008. After being the offensive coordinator for the Utah Blaze from 2011 to 2013, he became the Portland Thunder head coach in 2014. He was the head coach of the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles of the Indoor Football League (IFL) in 2017 and the Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League in 2019. Early life Sauk attended Detroit Catholic Central High School during the 1990–91 school year. Duane Brooks (born June 24, 1987) is an American football wide receiver for the Guangzhou Power of the China Arena Football League (CAFL). He played College Football at Stephen F. Austin University after transferring from Central Michigan University. He also been a member of the Colorado Ice, Spokane Shock and Portland Thunder. Professional career Portland Thunder Brooks became one of the best return men in the AFL during the 2015 season. Darron Varnell Thomas (born May 23, 1990) is a former American football quarterback. He was the starting quarterback for the University of Oregon football team that reached the 2011 BCS National Championship Game and won the 2012 Rose Bowl. Early life Thomas was born in Houston, Texas on May 23, 1990 to Latina Thomas and Darren Waters. Thomas attended Aldine High School in Aldine, Texas. Kyle Rowley (born January 30, 1979) is an arena football quarterback who is currently a free agent. He also played in the former af2. He played college football at Brown. Rowley was the first quarterback to win an AFL ArenaBowl and af2 ArenaCup Championship, with Nick Davila being the second. The Cleveland Gladiators season was the 15th season for the franchise in the Arena Football League, and their fifth while in Cleveland. The team was coached by Steve Thonn and plays their home games at Quicken Loans Arena. By finishing the regular season with a 17–1 record, the Gladiators set a league record for wins in a single season (this record was tied one year later by the San Jose SaberCats).
