2014 Niuean General Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Niue on 12 April 2014. Candidates supportive of the government of Premier Toke Talagi won 12 of the 20 seats. Background Following the 2011 election, Toke Talagi was re-elected as premier for a second term. The Assembly was dissolved on 7 March 2014. Electoral system Of the 20 Niue Assembly members, six were elected on a common roll and fourteen in single-member constituencies. There were no political parties in Niue at the time of the election, and all candidates were independents. Niue
Niue (, ; niu, Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand. Niue's land area is about and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. Niue is located in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. It is 604 kilometres northeast of Tonga. Young Vivian
Mititaiagimene Young Vivian is a Niuean politician and diplomat, who served as Premier of Niue twice, the first time from December 1992 to March 1993 following the death of Sir Robert Rex, and the second from 2002 to 2008. He also served as a Cabinet Minister multiple times, first as Minister of Education, Economic Development and Agriculture and later as Minister of Finance under Robert Rex, and in the Cabinet of Sani Lakatani. From 1979 to 1982 he served as Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission. Early political career Before entering politics Vivian worked as a teacher. He was first elected to the Niue Assembly in the 1969 general election and appointed to the Executive Council, serving as Member of Education in Robert Rex's pre-independence government. Jack Lipitoa
Jack Willie Lipitoa (born ) is a Niuean politician and former Member of the Niue Assembly. He is the older brother of former Cabinet Minister Enetama Lipitoa. Lipitoa worked as a teacher, first at Matalave and then at Niue High School. He was first elected to the Niuean Assembly at the 1987 Niuean general election, replacing his brother who had moved to a seat on the common roll. He has been re-elected at every election since. He retired at the 2023 election. Honours Lipitoa was awarded the Queen's Service Medal in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honours. Namukulu
Namukulu is one of the fourteen villages of Niue. With a population of 11 (2017 census), it is the smallest village on the island. It has an observation point located close to the Namukulu Cottages The village was established in 1922 by people moving from Tuapa. It celebrated its centenary in 2022. Geography The village is located about 5 kilometres from Alofi, and lies between the villages of Tuapa and Hikutavake Hikutavake is one of the fourteen villages of Niue. Bill Vakaafi Motufoou
Bill Vakaafi Motufoou is a Niuean politician and former Cabinet Minister. Motufoou was the General Secretary for the Mutalau Village Council and Committee Member of the Niue Island Organic Farming Association (NIOFA) before entering politics. He was first elected into the Niue Assembly as Assemblyman for the Village of Mutalau in the 1999 Niuean general election. He was re-elected at the 2002 election and appointed Minister of Works, Agriculture and Fisheries in the government of Young Vivian. In 2004 he was the Niuean delegate at the senior officers meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He was re-elected in 2005 and reappointed to Cabinet. He was re-elected unopposed at the 2008 election, but not appointed to Toke Talagi's cabinet. Mutalau
Mutalau is one of the fourteen villages of Niue. Its population at the 2017 census was 100, up from 97 in 2011. History Overview It was previously known as Ululauta and Matahefonua. ''Ululauta'' and ''Matahefonua'' both mean "head of the land". The name "Mutalau Ululauta Matahefonua" is adopted by the Mutalau people in Auckland, New Zealand as the name for their trust called the Mutalau Ululauta Matahefonua Trust (MUMT). Mutalau has a community hall called Salim Hall, named after the head of the UN Decolonisation Committee that came to Niue in the early 1970s to meet with Niueans and discuss the road map toward self-government. In 1864 Mutalau was listed as one of the five principal villages of Niue, and hosting a missionary station and Samoan teacher. Tofua Puletama is a Niuean politician and Member of the Niue Assembly. Puletama is a long-serving member of the Assembly who was first elected at the 1999 Niuean general election. He was re-elected unopposed at the 2002 election. He lost his seat at the 2011 election by a single vote. An election petition challenging the result was dismissed. Liku, Niue
Liku is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located close to the easternmost part of the island. It lies due east of the capital, Alofi, and its population at the 2017 census was 98. Geography Liku is connected to the capital by a road which traverses the centre of the island.
