2013 World Championships In Athletics – Men's 800 Metres
The men's 800 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Luzhniki Stadium on 10–13 August. In the final, Duane Solomon characteristically took out the pace at just about 50 seconds. Uncharacteristically, second place was occupied by his teammate Nick Symmonds, known for his come from behind tactics. On the final lap the two formed a team USA wall to prevent the rest of the field from getting around. Solomon held the lead into the final straight with Symmonds about to pounce. Mohammed Aman was behind Solomon in a box pinned in by Ayanleh Souleiman. Souleiman slowed as Symmonds slingshotted off the back stretch. The door opened and Aman took off in chase of Symmonds, passing him on the outside 20 meters before the finish. Joaquim Cruz
Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (born March 12, 1963) is a Brazilian former middle-distance runner, winner of the 800 meters at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He is one of only five men to run the 800 metres in less than 1 minute, 42 seconds. Biography Cruz was born in Taguatinga, Distrito Federal. The son of a steel worker, he began running as a 13-year-old, and showed great promise as a junior. At the age of 15 his personal best over 800 m stood at 1:51 min. John Lee Gray Jr. (born June 19, 1960) is a retired American world class 800 meter runner from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s and the holder of the 600m world best. A four-time-Olympian (1984-1996) in 1985 he set the US record of 1:42.60 at a meet in Koblenz. That time puts Gray as the nineteenth fastest performer of all time. He came seventh in the 1984 Summer Olympics, fifth in 1988, and won the bronze medal at the Barcelona Olympics of 1992. In 1993 Gray was one of the favourites to win a gold medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart as he had won the A-race at the prestigious meeting in Zurich. Yusuf Saad Kamel ( ar, يوسف سعد كامل), born Gregory Konchellah (born 29 March 1983) is a male former middle-distance runner who competed in the 800 metres and 1500 metres. Born in Narok, Kenya – the son of former two-time 800 metres World Champion Billy Konchellah – he represented Bahrain internationally. Kamel won the gold in the 1500 m and bronze in 800 m at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics held in Berlin. In early 2009 he stopped competing for Bahrain claiming unpaid salary and bonuses. He was willing to compete for Kenya, but his Kenyan passport was held by Bahraini officials. Without a passport, he was unable to compete in any competition.
