The 2013 May Day protests were a series of international protests involving hundreds of thousands of people that took place worldwide on May Day (1 May 2013) over the ongoing global economic crisis including austerity measures and poor working conditions. Asia Bangladesh Thousands of garment factory workers protested poor working conditions following the 2013 Savar building collapse. Cambodia Five thousand garment workers marched in Phnom Penh demanding better working conditions and wage increases. Indonesia Over 120,000 people from Jakarta and the surrounding cities of Depok, Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi gathered at Hotel Indonesia and marched to Merdeka Palace, disrupting business activity in Jakarta. May Day
May Day is a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on 1 May, around halfway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. Festivities may also be held the night before, known as May Eve. Traditions often include gathering wildflowers and green branches, weaving floral garlands, crowning a May Queen (sometimes with a male companion), and setting up a Maypole, May Tree or May Bush, around which people dance. Bonfires are also part of the festival in some regions. The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is an international federation of trade unions established in 1945. Founded in the immediate aftermath of World War Two, the organization built on the pre-war legacy of the International Federation of Trade Unions as a single structure for trade unions world-wide. With the emergence of the Cold War in the late 1940s, the WFTU splintered, with most trade unions from the Western-aligned countries leaving and creating the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in 1949. Civil Servants' Confederation
The Confederation of Greek Civil Servants' Trade Unions ( el, Ανώτατη Διοίκηση Ενώσεων Δημοσίων Υπαλλήλων, (Α.Δ.Ε.Δ.Υ), translit=Anótati Dioíkisi Enóseon Dimosíon Ypallílon, ADEDY), was established in May of 1926 under the name Civil Servants' Confederation. The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), in Greek Γ.Σ.Ε.Ε, is the highest, tertiary trade union body in Greece. It was founded in 1918 and is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation. GSEE is made up of 83 worker unions and 74 departmental secondary confederations. Its primary purpose is defending the interests of all private sector workers in Greece. All-Workers Militant Front
The All-Workers Militant Front ( el, Πανεργατικό Αγωνιστικό Μέτωπο, ΠΑΜΕ, ''Panergatiko Agonistiko Metopo'', PAME) is a coordination centre within the Greek trade union movement, founded on the initiative of Communist Party of Greece trade-unionists in April 1999. Among its members are unionists coming from different political backgrounds. Founding members were also cadres of DIKKI and others. PAME is critical of the official positions and leadership of the General Confederation of Greek Workers.
