This is a list of events in British radio during 2012. Events January *6 January – Following its sale to UKRD, Fresh Radio, which broadcast on MW across the Yorkshire Dales, closes. The more populous parts of the area are later served by Stray FM which is expanded to cover areas such as Skipton and Wharfedale, and the Richmond area is served to Star Radio North East. *7 January – **Alan Titchmarsh joins Classic FM to present a new Saturday morning programme. **After having his car stolen the previous evening, Graham Norton asks listeners of his Radio 2 show to help find it. Calling it "The Great Car Hunt" he tells listeners to "Keep your eyes out for it. It was filthy by the way." UKRD Group
The UKRD Group Ltd was a British media company that owned 15 commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. The name originates from UK Radio Developments. Since its acquisition in March 2019, it has been run as a subsidiary of Bauer Radio. History Formed on 22 August 1990 as a company to invest in commercial stations following the relaxation of station ownership laws, its first investment was a stake in Cornwall's Pirate FM 102, which was designed and launched by former County Sound boss Mike Powell who, after leaving County Sound, had formed Infinity Radio. Shortly after the launch, Infinity Radio merged with UK Radio Developments and Powell became CEO of the embryonic UKRD Group. Casey Kasem
Kemal Amin "Casey" Kasem (April 27, 1932 – June 15, 2014) was an American disc jockey, actor, and radio personality, who created and hosted several radio countdown programs, notably '' American Top 40''. He was the first actor to voice Norville "Shaggy" Rogers in the ''Scooby-Doo'' franchise (1969 to 1997 and 2002 to 2009) and as Dick Grayson/Robin in ''Super Friends'' (1973–1985). Kasem began hosting the original ''American Top 40'' on the weekend of July 4, 1970, and remained there until 1988. He would then spend nine years hosting another countdown titled ''Casey's Top 40'', beginning in January 1989 and ending in February 1998, before returning to revive ''American Top 40'' in 1998. Along the way, spin-offs of the original countdown were conceived for country music and adult contemporary audiences, and Kasem hosted two countdowns for the latter format beginning in 1992 and continuing until 2009. The Severn (radio)
The Severn was a local commercial station serving north & central Shropshire and the Telford & Wrekin area. The station was owned by MNA Broadcasting but was sold to UTV Media and merged on Monday 26 March 2012 with The Wyre and 107.7 The Wolf to form Signal 107, a station serving the Wolverhampton, Shropshire and north Worcestershire area. History The Shrewsbury and Oswestry radio stations launched at 7am on Monday 18 September 2006 with the first song played being " Seven Days" by Sting. The first voices on air were Will Tudor, (former Beacon FM Shropshire breakfast presenter) on 106.5 The Severn (Shrewsbury) and Ben Day on 107.1 The Severn (Oswestry). The Wyre
107.2 The Wyre was a local commercial radio station serving Kidderminster, Bewdley, Stourport-on-Severn, Stourbridge and Bromsgrove in England. The station was owned by MNA Broadcasting but was sold to UTV Media and merged on Monday 26 March 2012 with The Severn and 107.7 The Wolf to form Signal 107, a station also serving the Wolverhampton, Shropshire and north Worcestershire area. History Originally launched in September 2005 by the Midlands News Association (MNA Broadcasting). After three years, The Wyre gained permission from OFCOM to leave its Kidderminster studios and co-locate with Telford FM in Shropshire. On 3 February 2012 The Wyre, together with sister station The Severn, were acquired by UTV Media. Live programming ended on the same day on both stations. Wireless Group Limited is a radio and digital broadcasting network with headquarters in Belfast, Northern Ireland and with radio operations in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. It currently operates five stations in Ireland and 18 in the UK. The company was formerly known as UTV Media, owned by UTV Television. Its television broadcasting services were sold to ITV plc in February 2016 and its radio, sales services and websites were spun off into a new company, Wireless, later purchased by News Corp. In June 2016, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp reached an agreement to buy the company. The sale was completed in September 2016. Desert Island Discs
''Desert Island Discs'' is a radio programme broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It was first broadcast on the BBC Forces Programme on 29 January 1942. Each week a guest, called a " castaway" during the programme, is asked to choose eight recordings (usually, but not always, music), a book and a luxury item that they would take if they were to be cast away on a desert island, whilst discussing their life and the reasons for their choices. It was devised and originally presented by Roy Plomley. Since 2018 the programme has been presented by Lauren Laverne. More than 3,000 episodes have been recorded, with some guests having appeared more than once and some episodes featuring more than one guest. An example of a guest who falls into both categories is Bob Monkhouse, who appeared with his co-writer Denis Goodwin on 12 December 1955 and in his own right on 20 December 1998. BBC Radio 4 is a British national radio station owned and operated by the BBC that replaced the BBC Home Service in 1967. It broadcasts a wide variety of spoken-word programmes, including news, drama, comedy, science and history from the BBC's headquarters at Broadcasting House, London. Zoë Ball
Zoe Louise Ball (born 23 November 1970) is a British radio and television presenter. She was the first female host of both ''Radio 1 Breakfast'' and '' The Radio 2 Breakfast Show'' for the BBC, and presented the 1990s children's show ''Live & Kicking'', alongside Jamie Theakston from 1996–1999. Ball was a contestant in the third series of ''Strictly Come Dancing''. Following this, in 2011 she replaced Claudia Winkleman as host of the BBC Two spin-off show '' Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two'' until her departure in 2021. Inverness
Inverness (; from the gd, Inbhir Nis , meaning "Mouth of the River Ness"; sco, Innerness) is a city in the Scottish Highlands. It is the administrative centre for The Highland Council and is regarded as the capital of the Highlands. Historically it served as the county town of the county of Inverness-shire. Garrison FM was a network of radio stations in the United Kingdom serving British Army bases around the country. The station broadcast a mixture of music, news, and chat, their emphasis being to bring news of military-related issues to soldiers and their families, as well as the wider public in general.
