The 2012 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix presented by ShopAutoWeek.com was an IndyCar Series, IZOD IndyCar Series race that was held on June 3, 2012, on Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, The Raceway on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan. It was the sixth race of the 2012 IndyCar Series season, 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season. Originally scheduled to run over 90 laps, it was shortened to 60 laps. The race was won by Scott Dixon for the Chip Ganassi Racing team. Dario Franchitti finished second, and Simon Pagenaud clinched third. Preparations for the race were overshadowed by speculation over IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard's job, after he Twitter#Tweets, tweeted that some team owners were trying to get him fired. Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix
The Detroit Grand Prix (currently branded as the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear Corporation for sponsorship reasons) is an IndyCar Series race weekend held on a temporary circuit in Detroit, Michigan. The race has been held from 1989 to 2001, 2007 to 2008, and since 2012. Since 2012, the event has been scheduled for the weekend immediately following the Indianapolis 500. The origins of the event date back to the Formula One Detroit Grand Prix on the Detroit street circuit. The Champ Car, CART series began headlining the event in 1989, and in 1992, the race moved from downtown Detroit to Belle Isle, a park situated on an island in the Detroit River, which is the longest serving venue of the race. The 96th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday May 27, 2012. It was the premier event of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season. For the first time since 1996 all entries featured turbocharged engines, and all entries were brand new model-year chassis, as part of the ICONIC Project.
