2012 ASEAN University Games
The 2012 ASEAN University Games officially known as the 16th ASEAN University Games was a Southeast Asian university multi-sports event held in Vientiane, Laos. This was the first time Laos hosted the games. Laos is the eighth nation to host the ASEAN University Games after Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines and Vietnam. The games was held from 12 to 20 December 2012, although several events had commenced from 11 December 2012. Around 1700 athletes participated at the event which featured 240 events in 17 sports. It was opened and closed by Thongsing Thammavong, the Prime Minister of Laos at the New Laos National Stadium. The final medal tally was led by Malaysia, followed by Vietnam and Thailand with host Laos in fifth place. Vientiane
Vientiane ( , ; lo, ວຽງຈັນ, ''Viangchan'', ) is the capital and largest city of Laos. Vientiane is divided administratively into 9 cities with a total area of only approx. 3,920 square kilometres and is located on the banks of the Mekong, close to the Thai border. Vientiane was the administrative capital during French rule and, due to economic growth in recent times, is now the economic center of Laos. The city had a population of 948,477 as of the 2020 Census. Vientiane is noted as the home of the most significant national monuments in Laos – That Luang – which is a known symbol of Laos and an icon of Buddhism in Laos. National University Of Laos
The National University of Laos (NUOL) is a university in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Founded in 1996, with departments brought in from other existing colleges, it is the only national university in the country. The NUOL accepts students from all over Laos, along with international students. The university is a partner of the Greater Mekong Sub-region Academic and Research Network (GMSARN) and ASEAN University Network (AUN). Phankham Viphavanh
Phankham Viphavanh ( lo, ພັນຄຳ ວິພາວັນ; born 14 April 1951) is a Laotian politician, a member of the Politburo and the Executive Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. He became the Prime Minister of Laos, who was elected by the National Assembly of Laos in March 2021. He retired in December 2022. He was deputy minister in the prime minister's office from 2003 to 2005, then was elected to the eigth Party Central Committee in 2006, and became governor of Houaphanh province. He was elected to politburo in 2011, and then held the position of Minister of Education and Sports. He was also the president of the Lao–Vietnam Friendship Association. The Laos National Stadium or formally Anouvong Stadium (official name), also known as Vientiane Provincial stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Vientiane, Laos. 2014 ASEAN University Games
The 2014 ASEAN University Games, officially known as the 17th ASEAN University Games, was a Southeast Asian university multi-sport event held in Palembang, Indonesia from 11 to 21 December 2014. It was the fourth time Indonesia hosted the games and its first time since 2004. Previously, Indonesia also hosted the 1982 games and the 1990 games. Around 1000 athletes from 11 participating nations participated at the games which featured 226 events in 18 sports. Palembang is the fourth Indonesian city to host the ASEAN University Games after Jakarta in 1982, Bandung in 1990 and Surabaya in 2004. The games was opened by Jusuf Kalla, the vice-president of Indonesia at the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium. The final medal tally was led by host Indonesia, followed by Thailand and Malaysia.
