2011–12 NLA Season
The 2011–12 National League A season was the fifth ice hockey season of the National League A since the reorganization of the Swiss league. 12 teams participated in the league, which was won by EV Zug. National League A
The National League (NL) is a professional ice hockey league in Switzerland and is the top tier of the Swiss league system. Prior to the 2017–18 season, the league was known as National League A. During the 2018–19 season, the league had an average of 6,949 spectators per game which is the highest among European leagues (ahead of the KHL with 6,397 and the DEL with 6,215). The capital city's club SC Bern has been ranked first of all European clubs for 18 seasons and had an average attendance of 16,290 after the regular season. The ZSC Lions are another club in the top ten of European ice hockey attendance, ranking seventh with 9,694 spectators. Season structure During the regular season, each of the 14 teams play 52 games. The top eight teams after the regular season qualify for the playoffs to determine the Swiss champion in best-of-seven series. HC Fribourg-Gottéron
HC Fribourg-Gottéron is a professional ice hockey team based in Fribourg, Switzerland, which competes in the National League (NL). The team is the sixth most attended team in Switzerland for the 2015/16 season with 6,156 spectators. History The club was originally started as HC Gottéron by the citizens of the town of Auge in 1938. They competed on an outdoor rink, most notably at ''Les Augustins'', until 1982 when Patinoire St-Léonard was constructed. In 1980, the name ''HC Fribourg-Gottéron'' was adopted upon promotion into the National League (NL). In spite of the club's financial struggles for the better part of their existence in the NL, they managed to reach the league's championship finals three years in a row (1992–94), but have never won a championship in their long history. Björn Christen
Björn-Olaf Christen (born April 5, 1980) is a Swiss former professional ice hockey forward who played in Switzerland's National League A (NLA). Playing career Christen began his career as a hockey player in the youth team of SC Bern. In the 1996–97 season he made his senior debut in the National League A, and finished his rookie year as the Swiss champions with Bern. After five years, Christen left Bern in 2001 and moved on to their league rivals HC Davos . With Davos, he won the Spengler Cup in 2001 and 2004, and in 2002 and 2005, the Swiss Championship. In the summer of 2006, Christen moved to EV Zug. He played for them until his retirement at the end of the 2014–15 season to work in the insurance industry. Eric Beaudoin
Eric P. Beaudoin (born May 3, 1980) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League with the Florida Panthers. Playing career Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Beaudoin started his hockey career in the OHL. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for the Florida Panthers in the NHL as well as several AHL teams. In the fall of 2005, he signed with the Newcastle Vipers, but was released from his contract for a one-month tryout with Jokerit in the Finnish SM-liiga. When he was not signed on after the tryout, Beaudoin agreed to a subsequent two-game tryout with HPK that also did not lead to a contract. Eventually Beaudoin agreed to a contract for the rest of the season with Ässät, but instead signed with Mora IK in the Swedish Elitserien. Josh Holden
Joshua Derek Adam Holden (born January 18, 1978) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey centre who is currently the assistant Coach for EV Zug of the National League (NL) in Switzerland. He was drafted in the first round, 12th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Holden was born in Calgary, Alberta. After playing four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats, finishing in the league's top ten in scoring in both 1995–96 and 1996–97, Holden made his National Hockey League debut with the Canucks in the 1998–99 season, appearing in 30 games. After he played in 16 games with the Canucks over the next two seasons, he was claimed on waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes before the 2001–02 season. Glen Metropolit
Glen David Metropolit (born June 25, 1974) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who most notably played over 400 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) Playing career Early years A native of Toronto, Ontario, Metropolit was never drafted by an OHL or NHL team, yet managed a 10-year NHL career and 407 games played. After a GTHL career mostly in AA hockey, Metropolit played two seasons for the Richmond Hill Riots Jr.B. hockey club (OHA) before heading west to play for the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL. After graduating Tier II Jr.A. hockey, Metropolit started out playing for the Nashville Knights in the ECHL in the 1995–96 season. Reto Berra
Reto Berra (born 3 January 1987) is a Swiss professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently playing for HC Fribourg-Gottéron of the National League (NL). Berra played seven seasons in Switzerland's National League A, spending time with the GCK Lions, HC Davos and SCL Tigers before joining EHC Biel in 2009 where he was the team's starting goaltender for four years. He was an NHL draft pick of the St. Louis Blues, selected in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and was traded to the Calgary Flames, with whom he made his NHL debut in 2013–14. Internationally, Berra has played with the Swiss National Team on several occasions; he has appeared in two World Championships. Jussi Markkanen
Jussi Markkanen (born May 8, 1975) is a Finnish professional ice hockey executive and former goaltender. He is currently serving as general manager of SaiPa. Markkanen played extensively in various European professional leagues as well as the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the fifth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, 133rd overall, by the Edmonton Oilers, as an over-aged entrant. Playing career Markkanen played most of his NHL career in Edmonton, except for a single season stint with the New York Rangers. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, Markkanen played in the Russian Super League, where he posted a dominant 31–9–9 record. Tom Preissing
Thomas Joseph Preissing (born December 3, 1978) is an American former professional ice hockey player who played six seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). Preissing played in 326 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings and the Colorado Avalanche. Preissing was born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, but grew up in Rosemount, Minnesota. Playing career Amateur Preissing played four years as a forward on the varsity team at Rosemount High School before moving on to play two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL).
