2011 Wantok Cup
In July 2011, the men's national football teams of Solomon Islands and Vanuatu met for four games, with two hosted by each country. The first two were held in the Solomons on and around its Independence Day (7 July). They were followed by two in Vanuatu on and around that country's Independence Day (30 July). Thus the competition(s) conformed to the spirit of the seemingly defunct Wantok Cup, although it is not certain whether that name was formally used for this event. Vanuatu won 3–2 on aggregate over the span of the four games, though they should probably be considered two separate competitions (as the Wantok Cup was initially intended), in which case each country won its own Independence Day event. Honiara
Honiara () is the capital and largest city of Solomon Islands, situated on the northwestern coast of Guadalcanal. , it had a population of 92,344 people. The city is served by Honiara International Airport and the seaport of Point Cruz, and lies along the Kukum Highway. The airport area to the east of Honiara was the site of a battle between the United States and the Japanese during the Guadalcanal Campaign in World War II, the Battle of Henderson Field of 1942, from which America emerged victorious. After Honiara became the new administrative centre of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate in 1952 with the addition of many administrative buildings, the town began to develop and grow in population. Benjamin Totori
Benjamin Totori (born 20 February 1986) is a Solomon Islands footballer who plays as a striker for Kossa. Club career A small but speedy striker, Totori made his name at NZFC side YoungHeart Manawatu before moving to Richmond Athletic and then onto Waitakere United in 2007. In 2008, he moved abroad signing with the Portland Timbers in the United States after impressing New Zealand-born coach Gavin Wilkinson. Totori returned to Waitakere United after injury cut short his career in the USA. He joined Koloale FC Honiara in October 2010 after another successful spell in New Zealand. He immediately ended up top goalscorer in the Telekom S-league, netting 23 goals in only 19 matches. On 19 June 2012 it was announced Totori had signed a one-year deal with Hyundai A-League club Wellington Phoenix. Daniel Michel
Daniel Michel (born 18 August 1995) is an Australian boccia player. He represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. He won the bronze medal in the Mixed B3 at the Tokyo Paralympics. Early life Michel was born on 18 August 1995 in the eastern Sydney suburb of Maroubra, New South Wales, before his family relocated to the Sutherland Shire in the early 2000s. His mother is of Dutch origin, having been born in The Netherlands and immigrating to Australia in the early 1990s, whilst his father is Australian. He was born with spinal muscular atrophy which means he has minimal movement and strength throughout his body. Daniel attended Heathcote High School and graduated in 2013. Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and north-west of Vanuatu. The Wantok Cup was an international football competition between the national teams of three Melanesian countries: Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. 2008 Wantok Cup
The inaugural edition of the Wantok Cup was held during Independence Day celebrations in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from 3 to 7 July 2008. The hosts were represented by two teams, while Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu were initially scheduled to enter one team each. Papua New Guinea withdrew at the last moment, citing "financial problems". The Solomon Islands U23 became the first Wantok Cup champions, on home ground. The second Wantok Cup was scheduled to be held later the same month, during Independence Day celebrations in Vanuatu. The event was cancelled for financial reasons, and the second edition of the Wantok Cup was rescheduled to be held in Vanuatu in July 2010.
