2011 Larne Borough Council Election
Elections to Larne Borough Council were held on 5 May 2011 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Larne Borough Council
Larne Borough Council was a Local Council in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. It merged with Ballymena Borough Council and Carrickfergus Borough Council in May 2015 under the reorganisation of local government in Northern Ireland to become Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. Its headquarters was in the town of Larne. The Borough of Larne was divided into 3 electoral areas: Larne Town, Larne Lough and Coast Road. At the final election in 2011 15 members were elected from the following political parties: 4 Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), 3 Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), 2 Independent, 3 Alliance Party, 1 Traditional Unionist Voice, 1 Sinn Féin and 1 Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). Oliver McMullan
Oliver McMullan (born 22 March 1952) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician, who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim from 2011 to 2017. He was also elected to Larne Borough Council in the 2011 local elections. McMullan was active in business life in his native Cushendall, where he owned a local pub. He entered politics in 1993 when he was elected as an Independent to Moyle District Council, topping the poll. He also topped the poll in the same elections in 1997 and 2001, standing as either an Independent or Independent Nationalist. McMullan headed the ''Independent McMullan'' list in the 1996 elections to the Northern Ireland Forum. He received 670 votes (2%) in North Antrim, with the list receiving 927 votes (0.12%) across Northern Ireland, meaning that no candidates were elected. Larne Town (District Electoral Area)
Larne Town was one of the three district electoral areas in Larne, Northern Ireland which existed from 1985 to 2014. Roy Beggs
John Robert Beggs (born 20 February 1936), commonly known as Roy Beggs, is an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician. Beggs was educated at Ballyclare High School, followed by Stranmillis College, to study teacher training. After his training Beggs became a teacher at Larne High School and had risen to be deputy principal before leaving the profession upon his election to the Westminster Parliament. He first entered politics in 1973 as a councillor for Larne Borough Council. for the Democratic Unionist Party. Bobby McKee
Bobby McKee, MBE (1941 – 24 January 2021) was a Unionist politician in Larne, Northern Ireland and former member of the Ulster Volunteer Force. McKee was a Democratic Unionist Party councillor and a member of Larne Borough Council since 1989. He served as a Mayor of Larne in 2004 and 2008. His brother Jack McKee, who died in 2015, was a DUP councillor in Larne and subsequently a member of the Traditional Unionist Voice. He lost both his legs in 1974 as the result of an Irish Republican Army car bomb when he was a member of the UVF. A founder member and chairman of the N.I. Amputees Association he was also chairman of Larne Disabled Fitness Suite. Bobby was Vice chairman of C.A.B. and was a member for 10 years. A member of N.I. Danny Donnelly (politician)
Danny Donnelly is a Northern Irish politician who has been an Alliance Party Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim since May 2022. Political career Early career (2011-2022) Donnelly began his political career as a candidate for the Green Party NI in the 2011 local elections for Larne Borough Council, before leaving the party to join Alliance. Donnelly later ran in the newly formed Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in the 2014 local elections as the Alliance candidate for the Braid constituency, but failed to be elected. Following this, he ran alongside Stewart Dickson in the 2016 and 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly elections, coming 9th and then 8th - but failing to be elected. Gordon Lyons
Gordon Lyons (born 6 March 1986) is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Lyons has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim since August 2015. Lyons worked as an assistant to DUP Member of the Legislative Assembly Sammy Wilson for five years. He stood unsuccessfully in East Antrim at the 2011 Northern Ireland Assembly election, and also for the Coast Road area of Larne Borough Council. Local Government In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council).
