Slovak Parliamentary Election, 2010
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovakia on 12 June 2010. The elections were contested by eighteen parties, six of which passed the 5% threshold for sitting in parliament. Despite the incumbent Smer of Prime Minister Robert Fico winning a plurality, the new government consisted of a coalition led by the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party's Iveta Radičová and included KDH, SaS and Most-Hid. However, her government fell on 11 October 2011 following a vote of no confidence with a new election called for 10 March 2012. Background A total of 2,401 candidates applied to contest the 150 seats. Polls in February 2010 had indicated that the current governing party Smer-SD (Direction – Social Democracy) would win a plurality with a margin of 25%. Peter Dzúrik
Peter Dzúrik (29 December 1968 – 9 September 2010) was a Slovakia international football defender or defensive midfielder. He played 45 matches and scored two goals for Slovakia. Club career Dzúrik, native of Košice, began playing football in district Košická Nová Ves and he moved to ZŤS Košice at the age of 17. He made his first team debut for ZŤS in the 1986–87 season. The next season, he established himself in the team, playing 16 matches. After soldiership in Znojmo he came back to ZŤS but he did not play many matches due to injury. He moved to Chemlon Humenné in 1993 and he won the Slovak Cup for club in 1996. He signed for 1. FC Košice in January 1997 and helped them win the first Slovak title ever and qualify to the 1997–98 UEFA Champions League group stage as first Slovak team ever. Slovak Political Reform Referendum, 2010
A referendum on political reform was held in Slovakia on 18 September 2010, following a successful petition started as a civil activity along with foundation of the radical neo-liberal Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), which later became the third-largest party in the National Council. 401,126 signatures were collected, with 386,000 found valid. The referendum failed to meet the turnout threshold required under the Constitution of Slovakia, with only 22.8% of the electorate voting: far below the 50% required. Large majorities voted in favour of all six proposals, with between 70% and 95% supporting each proposal. 2010 Bratislava Shooting
The 2010 Bratislava shooting, or the Devínska Nová Ves shooting, occurred on 30 August 2010, when eight people were killed and 17 others injured by a lone gunman who opened fire in Devínska Nová Ves district in a suburb of the Slovak capital, Bratislava. The gunman then committed suicide. The shooting spree took place both inside a local panel building and later in the street outside. This was the second-deadliest attack in the modern history of Slovakia. This was also the first time in Slovak history that a mass murderer went on a shooting spree. According to Police President Jaroslav Spišiak, Slovak police has to consult with other countries and find the best procedures for these cases, something that has not yet been done, as of February 2011. Richard Sulík
Richard Sulík (; born 12 January 1968) is a Slovak politician, economist and businessman. He is the leader of the political party Freedom and Solidarity and served as Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Economy in Government of Slovakia led by Eduard Heger. Sulik and his party resigned from the government on August, 31 and early September. Life Born in 1968 in Czechoslovakia, Sulík emigrated in 1980 with his parents to West Germany, where they lived in the city of Pforzheim. In 1987 he went to Munich to study physics and later economics at the Ludwig Maximilian University. When the borders were reopened right after the end of the cold war, Sulík returned in 1991 to Czechoslovakia. Pavol Paška
Pavol Paška (23 February 1958 – 6 April 2018) was a Slovak politician who served as Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2014. He was a member of the Direction - Social Democracy (Smer-SD) party. Early life and education Paška was born in Košice on 23 February 1958. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the Comenius University in Bratislava in 1985. His study fields included Marxist–Leninist philosophy and aesthetics. Prior to his university studies he worked for the State Company Zdroj in Košice.
