The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The triple jump was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympics event since the Games' inception in 1896. According to World Athletics rules, "the hop shall be made so that an athlete lands first on the same foot as that from which he has taken off; in the step he shall land on the other foot, from which, subsequently, the jump is performed." Dana Velďáková (born 3 June 1981 in Rožňava, Czechoslovakia) is a former Slovak athlete specialising in the triple jump. A very regular jumper, qualifying for the final at almost every major competition, her biggest senior successes are two bronze medals at the European Athletics Indoor Championships, in 2009 and 2011, and the silver at the 2007 Summer Universiade. Her personal bests in the event are 14.51 metres outdoors, achieved in May 2008 in Pavia, and 14.40 metres indoors achieved in March 2009 in Turin. Keila da Silva Costa (born 6 February 1983) is a Brazilian long jumper and triple jumper. She has competed in three Olympic Games, 2004, 2008 and 2012, and has reached the final round both there and in World Championships and World Indoor Championships. She is the South American record holder in triple jump with 14.58 metres, and has 6.88 metres in the long jump. Both results were achieved in 2007. Early career She was born in Abreu e Lima near Recife, and took up athletics at the age of nine. It was not the easiest of things to become an international athlete, as the city of Abreu e Lima did not sport a rubber track; also she came from a "humble family".
