2010 Dunedin Mayoral Election
The 2010 Dunedin mayoral election occurred on Saturday, 9 October 2010 and was conducted under the Single Transferable Voting system. The candidates for mayor included Peter Chin, the incumbent who contested for a third consecutive term. He faced six other candidates. Of these, three stood in the 2007 mayoral race (former councillor Lee Vandervis, who came second, Olivier Lequeux, who came fifth, and Jimmy Knowles, who finished last). Other candidates include incumbent city councillor Dave Cull, Aaron Hawkins and Kevin Dwyer. Dave Cull won the mayoral election becoming Dunedin's 57th mayor. Dave Cull
David Charles Cull (1 April 1950 – 27 April 2021) was the mayor of the city of Dunedin in New Zealand. He became the 57th Mayor of Dunedin in October 2010 and was re-elected in both the 2013 mayoralty race and 2016 mayoral election. Before politics, he was a presenter for Television New Zealand and an author. Early life and career before politics Cull was born and grew up in Invercargill, where he attended Southland Boys' High School. He obtained a BA and PG Dip in political science at the University of Otago. Peter Wing Ho Chin, CNZM () (born 1941) is a lawyer and was the 56th Mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand. He served two terms as Mayor from 2004 to 2010. Early life and career Peter Chin is a descendant of the earliest Chinese immigrants to New Zealand, and his family owned a fish and chips take-away establishment in Dunedin. In the 1950s Chin was a student at Otago Boys' High School and then the University of Otago, graduating with an LLB in 1965. He started working as a lawyer in Dunedin in 1968 and became a founding partner at the Otago law firm Webb Farry. He also took up a position in the Otago District Law Society. Lee Vandervis
Lee Vandervis (born 1955) is a local-body politician who was first elected to the Dunedin City Council in the 2004 local elections. Vandervis has run for mayor in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022; finishing second in 2007 and 2019. Vandervis failed to win mayor again in 2022, but he was re-elected to the Council. Vandervis has often been an independent voice in council, notably opposing his own council in a protracted court battle. Personal life Lee Vandervis was born in 1955 in Balclutha. He is the second son of Dutch immigrant parents, who settled in New Zealand after the Second World War. Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Aaron Garth Hawkins (born ) is a New Zealand politician who served as the 58th mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand from 2019 to 2022. He was elected as Mayor on 12 October 2019 with 54.54% of the vote, after two prior terms as councillor. He is endorsed by the Green Party. He unsuccessfully stood for re-election as mayor in 2022.
