Algoma District
Algoma District is a district and census division in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. The name was created by an American ethnologist, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who was appointed Indian agent to the Ojibwe in Sault Ste. Marie region in 1822. "Al" is derived from Algonquin, while "goma" is a variant of gomee, meaning lake or water. Algoma District has shoreline along Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It has an international border crossing to the American state of Michigan, at Sault Ste. Marie. Historically, it was known for its lumber and mining industries. The rugged scenery of the region has inspired works by Canadian artists, particularly the Group of Seven. Jocelyn, Ontario
Jocelyn is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located on St. Joseph Island in the Algoma District. The current reeve of the township is Mark Henderson. Jocelyn is home to Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site. The primary community in the township is Kentvale, which is located around Kentvale Merchants Limited, the largest general store on St. Joseph Island. Kentvale Merchants Limited is actually located in the Township of St. Joseph and previously operated under the name Kentvale General Merchants. It was opened in 1888 by Emily M. Kent and Frederick B. Kent. A community outdoor hockey rink on the property provided recreation for this farming community for many years. It was operated by the Kent family and volunteers from the community. The original operation consisted of a grist and saw mill operated by Frederick and a store that Emily ran. John Rowswell
John Rowswell (May 18, 1955 – August 31, 2010) was a Canadian politician who served as the mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario from 2000 to 2010. He was first elected in the 2000 municipal election, defeating Steve Butland, and in 2006 he was re-elected for his third term with approximately 56.5% of the vote. He was a consulting engineer who operated his own company, Rowswell & Associates Engineers Ltd. He was one of the longest-serving mayors in the city's history; only Joe Fratesi served as mayor of Sault Ste. Marie for longer than Rowswell. One of his final significant acts as mayor was to issue a formal apology to French Canadians for the Sault Ste. Workers' Compensation
Workers' compensation or workers' comp is a form of insurance providing wage replacement and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment in exchange for mandatory relinquishment of the employee's right to sue his or her employer for the tort of negligence. Prince is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located within the Algoma District northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. Although the township is not part of the city of Sault Ste.
