The 2009 European Parliament election in Malta was the election of the delegation from Malta to the European Parliament in 2009. The elections were held on 6 June on the same day as the 2009 Maltese local council elections. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. Voter turnout in parliamentary elections decreased each time after 1979 until 2019, when voter turnout increased by eight percentage points, and rose above 50% for the first time since 1994. Glenn Bedingfield
Glenn Bedingfield (born 15 November 1974, Pietà, Malta) is a Member of the Parliament of Malta and Government Whip. Career Bedingfield was one of the first journalists to join the newly set up Labour Party owned Super One Radio and Super One Television, One Productions in 1991. As an investigative political journalist Bedingfield won the 2002 Journalist of the Year award for broadcast TV. Bedingfield is currently serving as the Chairman of the Kottonera Foundation. Politics Bedingfield came to the Labour Party fold at the start of the 90s after a journalistic stint with Bay Radio, when he joined One Productions Ltd, Labour's media venture. David Casa (born 16 November 1968 in Valletta) is a Maltese politician and Member of the European Parliament. He is Malta's longest serving MEP, having served since June 2004. As a member of the Nationalist Party in Malta, he belongs to the European People's Party. Casa has been described by Politico as a key MEP for his work as co-rapporteur on the Social Climate Fund. Edward Scicluna (born October 12, 1946 in Rabat, Malta) is a Maltese economist and politician. Scicluna assumed the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Malta as from 1st January 2021 for a five-year term. Marlene Mizzi (born 24 December 1954, Rabat, Malta) is a Maltese politician and former Member of the European Parliament. She currently serves as the Maltese ambassador to Sweden and Norway. Louis Grech (born 22 March 1947) is a Maltese politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Malta, as well as Minister of European Affairs. He also served as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs of the Labour Party. He currently serves as consultant to the Prime Minister Robert Abela and attends Cabinet. Sharon Ellul-Bonici is a Maltese Eurosceptic politician. Sharon Ellul-Bonici has been a member of the soft eurosceptic Maltese Labour Party. She tried to obtain her party's endorsement as a candidate for the 2004 European Parliament election, but was turned down for her hard eurosceptic links. Ellul-Bonici was at the time active in pan-European organisations such as No2EU and TEAM.
