2009 Canadian Rugby Championship
The 2009 Canadian Rugby Championship was the inaugural season of the CRC, Canada's highest level of domestic rugby competition. The BC Bears won the MacTier Cup going undefeated, while the Ontario Blues finished as runners-up, allowing them both to advance to the Americas Rugby Championship. Nathan Hirayama's 36 points scored in the regular season is an all-time record for the league, during the 6 game format. The format was later changed to 10 games in the regular season, where in 2011 Dean Blanks scored 55 points, holding the current league record for points scored, albeit having played three more games. BC Bears
The British Columbia Bears (formerly Pacific Tyee) are the senior men's representative rugby team for British Columbia. They were founded in 2009 to compete in the Americas Rugby Championship against other representative teams from Canada, Argentina, and the United States. In their inaugural season, the Bears went undefeated in round robin play against other Canadian teams and only fell to the Argentina Jaguars in the ARC Final. Beginning in 2010 the team, along with the Ontario Blues, The Rock, and the Prairie Wolf Pack, have participated in the newly formed Canadian Rugby Championship. Ontario Blues
The Ontario Blues are the senior men's representative rugby team for Ontario. They were founded in 2009 to compete in the Americas Rugby Championship against other representative teams from Canada, Argentina, and the United States. In their inaugural season, the Blues suffered narrow losses against British Columbia and the Wolf Pack before defeating the Rock to advance to the Canadian Final. The Blues would again lose to BC, but defeated the U.S. Selects in the bronze medal match. In 2010, Rugby Canada changed the format of the Canadian competition of the ARC, introducing the CRC. The four Canadian teams which competed in the ARC stayed the same, but now played in the CRC, with a Canadian Selects team being chosen from CRC players, and that selects team going on to represent Canada at the ARC. The 2010 CRC Season was the second season of the Canadian Rugby Championship. This was the first year when instead of the CRC Champion advancing to the Americas Rugby Championship, a Canada Selects team was chosen from players participating in the tournament to go on and represent Canada at the international tournament. This was also the first season that included a post-season to decide the winner of the MacTier Cup. MacTier Cup
The MacTier Cup is the name of the championship for the top senior men's rugby league in Canada. Originally awarded to the champion of the Rugby Canada Super League (RCSL), the MacTier Cup was established in 1998 along with the RCSL. The first MacTier Cup Championship match was played between the Vancouver Island Crimson Tide and the Nova Scotia Keltics, Nova Scotia Keiths. Vancouver Island defeated Halifax in that game. The champions of the final RCSL championship were the Newfoundland Rock, who won the cup in 2008 after defeating the Calgary Mavericks 30–6. Since 2009, the Cup has been awarded to the winners of the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC). 2009 Americas Rugby Championship Season
The 2009 Americas Rugby Championship season was the inaugural season of the Americas Rugby Championship. The season featured a Canadian division with four teams representing provinces or regions of Canada, along with international A sides from the U.S. and Argentina. The Canadian Division played a round robin schedule to determine what two teams would play in the Canadian final. The BC Bears went undefeated in round robin play and defeated the Ontario Blues 12–8 in the Canadian final. The international finalist was decided in a match between the U.S. Select XV and the Argentina Jaguars. The match was won by the Jaguars 57–10. The ARC Final pitted the BC Bears against the Argentina Jaguars. The Jaguars gave the Bears their only loss of the season in a 35–11 decision. The 2011 Canadian Rugby Championship was the 3rd season of the Canadian Rugby Championship. No Canada Selects team would be chosen because there was no ARC season that year, due to the Rugby World Cup being held the same year, in which Canada participated. The Ontario Blues were the 2011 CRC champions, winning the MacTier Cup a game before the season ended, having enough points to win the championship without being affected by the last game of the season, which they won anyway. It was their first ever CRC Championship title. Dean Blanks scored 55 points during the season, becoming the league's highest ever scorer, although it was the first year with more than six games a season. Duncan Maguire also set a record, scoring four tries, becoming the season's and the league's highest ever try scorer, but again this was in a season where each team played two more games than in previous years. Atlantic Rock, also known as The Rock, are a Canadian rugby union team based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The team plays in the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC) and is intended to draw most of its players from the rugby unions of Canada's five Eastern provinces: Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (PEI) and Newfoundland & Labrador. The Rugby Championship is an international rugby union competition contested annually by Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
