The 2009 Adelaide Sevens, promoted as the International Rugby Sevens Adelaide 2009, was a rugby sevens tournament that was part of the IRB Sevens World Series in the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series, 2008–09 season. It was the Australian Sevens leg of the series, held between 3 and 5 April at the Adelaide Oval in South Australia. 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series
The 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series was the tenth of an annual IRB Sevens World Series of rugby union sevens tournaments for full national sides run by the International Rugby Board since 1999–2000. South Africa clinched the 2008–09 World Series, its first Series title. The defending series champions New Zealand finished fourth. Sevens is traditionally played in a two-day tournament format. However, the most famous event, the Hong Kong Sevens, is played over three days, largely because it involves 24 teams instead of the normal 16. Starting in 2008–09, the Australia leg (which involves the normal 16 teams) was spread out over a three-day period. Samoa National Rugby Sevens Team
The Samoa national rugby sevens team, referred to as Samoa Sevens or Manu Samoa 7s, competes in the annual World Rugby Sevens Series. Representing the polynesian country of Samoa, with a population of about 202,000, the team competes against some of the wealthiest countries in the world. The Samoa sevens team is overseen by the Samoa Rugby Football Union, which oversees all of rugby union in Samoa. Samoa won the 2009–10 World Series by winning four tournaments – the Hong Kong Sevens, the USA Sevens, the Adelaide Sevens, and the Edinburgh Sevens. 2009 London Sevens
The London Sevens is played annually as part of the IRB Sevens World Series for international rugby sevens (seven-a-side version of rugby union). The 2009 competition took place on May 23 and May 24 in London, England, and was the seventh Cup trophy in the 2008-09 IRB Sevens World Series. England won the most prestigious Cup trophy, with an extra time 31-26 victory over New Zealand; Fiji won the Plate trophy, Kenya won the Bowl trophy, and Canada won the Shield trophy. 2009 Hong Kong Sevens
The Hong Kong Sevens, referred to as the Cathay Pacific Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens for sponsorship reasons is the 5th stop on the IRB Sevens World Series. The 2009 event was played between the 27–29 March, and was won by Fiji. Unlike the 7 other tournaments, Hong Kong contains 24 teams to compete. Nasoni Roko
Nasoni Rokobiau, born 29 November 1979, in Vunidawa, Fiji is a rugby union player. Rokobiau has represented Fiji in their rugby sevens team, as well as Fiji in the 15 man form of the game. He has played for the Fiji national rugby sevens team since 2002, representing his country in many International Rugby Board sevens tournaments. Roko played for Fiji when they won the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens. He was included in the squad for the Wellington leg of the 2007 World Sevens Series. Vereniki Goneva (born 5 April 1984) is a Fijian rugby union footballer who plays for Mont-de-Marsan in France's Pro D2, the second division. He plays as a centre or wing. Goneva made his debut in English rugby for Rotherham against Northampton Saints in the RFU Championship in the 2007–2008 season. He played for Leicester Tigers from 2012 to 2016, where he won the Aviva Premiership title, before signing with Newcastle Falcons. He has been Premiership Rugby's top try scorer during two seasons. Kevin Swiryn
Kevin Swiryn (born December 16, 1984) is an American rugby union player, who played professionally for Agen in the French Top 14. Swiryn played at both centre and wing. Early life Swiryn was born in San Jose, California. He started playing rugby when he was 19 years old after the American football program at Saint Mary's College of California was cut. He went on to be named to the All-American Team, where he captained the squad in 2008. Professional career Swiryn's national team debut was on May 31, 2009 against Ireland. He was selected to tour with the United States national rugby union team for the Autumn 2010 tour of Europe. He also made the U.S. squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The United States national rugby sevens team competes in international rugby sevens competitions. The national sevens team is organized by USA Rugby, and the team has been led by Head Coach Mike Friday since 2014.
