2008 World Modern Pentathlon Championships
The 2008 World Modern Pentathlon Championships were held in Budapest, Hungary from May 29 to June 3. It was the last Olympic qualification event in modern pentathlon before the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Leila Gyenesei
Leila Gyenesei (born 22 April 1986) is a Hungarian modern pentathlete and cross-country skier. She is a five-time medalist at the World Championships, and is currently ranked no. 19 in the world by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM). She is also the daughter of István Gyenesei, former Minister of Local Government and chairman of the Association for Somogy party. Career Gyenesei started out her sporting career as a triathlete and swimmer, until she began with cross-country skiing at the age of eighteen. She first competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and placed sixty-ninth in the women's 10 km classical cross-country skiing, with a time of 36:43.0. Sarolta Kovács
Sarolta Kovács (born 12 March 1991) is a Hungarian modern pentathlete. An individual and team World Champion, she competed in the modern pentathlon at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. Career In 2016, she was the surprise winner of the UIPM World Championships, as she missed much of the competitive season due to injury. The championships were held in Moscow, where previously she had won World Championship silver in 2011. She was also part of the Hungarian teams that won gold at the World Championships in 2016 with Zsofia Foldhazi and Tamara Alekszejev and in 2017 and 2018 with the same teammates, and bronze in 2015 (again with Foldhazi and Alekszejev). Mhairi Spence
Mhairi Spence (born 31 August 1985) is a British modern pentathlete. She has won a series of medals at European and World Championships, but was not selected for the 2008 Summer Olympics by the British team due to the limited number of places available. After considering retiring in 2009, she returned to the sport and in 2012 she won gold medals in both the individual and the team events at the 2012 World Championships, and qualified to be chosen for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Early life Mhairi Spence was born in Inverness, Scotland, on 31 August 1985. She was a member of the Pony Club at an early age, competing in Tetrathlon from the age of ten. Heather Fell
Heather Fell (born 3 March 1983 in Plymouth, England) is a former British modern pentathlete turned triathlete. She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics, winning the silver medal in the women's modern pentathlon event. Early life Fell grew up in Tavistock, Devon, where she was taught to ride and shoot, both disciplines in the pentathlon, by the parents of the 2000 Olympic pentathlon bronze medallist Kate Allenby. Heather has a degree in physiotherapy from Brunel University. Paulina Joanna Boenisz (born 28 September 1978 in Warsaw) is a three-time Olympic modern pentathlete from Poland. Katy Livingston (born 10 January 1984 in Guisborough, England) is a British modern pentathlete who has competed at the Olympic Games. Early life Whilst at school she was a member of the running club, New Marske Harriers and swimming club, Saltburn and Marske, and played netball at a county level for Cleveland. Livingston trains at the University of Bath, where she completed a degree in Coach Education and Sports Development. She is a supporter of Sheffield Wednesday football club, and says that her earliest memory of major sporting event is going with her father to watch one of their matches. Aya Medany
Aya Medany ( ar, آیة مدني; born November 20, 1988) is an Egyptian modern pentathlete. She made her Olympic début at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, as the youngest competitor both in the Egyptian team and competing in the pentathlon. Career Medany made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics at the age of 15. She was the youngest on the Egyptian team and the youngest out of any of the athletes competing in the pentathlon. She finished in 28th place overall. She won the Olympic test event in Beijing, China, meaning that she qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
