2008 WAFL Grand Final
The 2008 West Australian Football League (WAFL) Grand Final was the culmination of the 124th season of the premier Australian rules football league in Western Australia. It was played at Subiaco Oval on 20 September 2008 and was won by the Subiaco Football Club, who defeated the Swan Districts Football Club by 57 points. Background Subiaco had dominated the 2008 season as no team in a major Australian Rules League had since Port Adelaide in the 1914 SAFL season. After twenty home-and-away games the Lions had lost just one game by the narrowest of margins to their Grand Final rivals in mid-season, with the closest any other opponent got to them being eighteen points. West Australian Football League
The West Australian Football League (WAFL) is an Australian rules football league based in Perth, Western Australia. The league currently consists of ten teams, which play each other in a 20-round season usually lasting from March to September, with the top five teams playing off in a finals series, culminating in a Grand Final. The league also runs reserves, colts (under-19) and women's competitions. The WAFL was founded in 1885 as the West Australian Football Association (WAFA), and has undergone a variety of name changes since then, re-adopting its current name in 2001. Greg Broughton
Greg Broughton (born 29 September 1986) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Fremantle Football Club and Gold Coast Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). After playing in Subiaco's 2006, 2007 and 2008 WAFL premiership winning teams and winning the 2008 Tom Outridge Medal as Subiaco's best and fairest player, Broughton was drafted to Fremantle in the 2009 Rookie Draft with Fremantle's final selection, number 74 overall. Scott Watters (born 25 January 1969) is a former Australian rules football player and coach. As a player, he was drafted from the South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) to the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL) in 1988. He later played for the Sydney Swans and Fremantle. He was a member of the 1985 Teal Cup winning side, the first year that Western Australia had won the national championships. Marc Webb (footballer)
Marc Webb (born 23 February 1979) is an Australian rules football coach in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for Port Melbourne and in the WAFL for Perth and Subiaco. He served as an assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs after previously being a premiership winning senior coach for Claremont and serving as an assistant coach for Fremantle. He's the husband of Fremantle AFL Women's player Lisa Webb. Playing career Webb played six matches for Port Melbourne in the VFL during the 2000 season. Daniel Chick
Daniel Patrick Chick (born 10 February 1976) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn and the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League. Chick is also well known for having a finger amputated in 2002 so he could continue playing football. Hawthorn career Daniel Chick was drafted by Hawthorn from East Fremantle with pick #25 in 1995. Allistair Pickett
Allistair Pickett (born 4 August 1973) is an Australian rules footballer who played for Subiaco in the WAFL. Pickett won the 2002 and 2004 Sandover Medals. Playing career A small and pacy rover, Pickett started his career in the 1990s with West Perth, playing three WAFL matches, but couldn't make an impact due to injuries. In 2001 he tried again, joining Peel Thunder and the following season became the first ever player from the club to win a Sandover Medal. He won his second Sandover Medal in 2004 while at Subiaco where he also enjoyed team success with four premierships. Blake Broadhurst (born 29 December 1985) is an Australian rules footballer who formerly played for Subiaco Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Bradley Phillip Smith (born 11 May 1979) is a former Australian rules footballer, who played for in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) from 1998–2009. Phil Read (born 20 October 1979) is a former Australian rules footballer for the AFL's West Coast Eagles and Melbourne Football Club. Read was educated at Wesley College, Perth. West Coast Eagles Drafted by the Eagles, Read kicked 12 goals in 21 games in his rookie season. During the "Demolition Derby" in Round 21, 2000, Read was struck numerous times during an attempted fight with Fremantle's Dale Kickett. Kyal Horsley (born 2 September 1987) is an Australian rules footballer who formerly played for the Gold Coast Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, he previously also played with the Kalgoorlie City Football Club in the Goldfields Football League (GFL) and the Subiaco Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), where he finished runner-up in the 2011 Sandover Medal to Luke Blackwell.
