2008 UCI ProTour
The 2008 UCI ProTour is the fourth year of the UCI ProTour system. Following protracted disagreement between the organisers of the Grand Tours (ASO, RCS and Unipublic) and the UCI, all races organized by ASO, RCS and Unipublic were withdrawn from the ProTour calendar. This removed all three Grand Tours ( Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España), four of the five monuments ( Milan–San Remo, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Giro di Lombardia) and four further races ( Paris–Nice, Tirreno–Adriatico, La Flèche Wallonne and Paris–Tours). As such, the quality of the races of the ProTour was diminished. The Australian race, the Tour Down Under was added to the calendar, making it the first race outside Europe on the ProTour (although races had previously been held outside Europe as part of the UCI Road World Cup). Murilo Antonio Fischer (born 16 June 1979) is a Brazilian former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2004 and 2016 for the , , and teams. In 2008, for the first time in ten years, two Grand Tours were won by one rider, the Spaniard Alberto Contador. Alessandro Ballan succeeded fellow Italian Paolo Bettini as World Champion, winning the road race in his home country, where Varese hosted the World Championships for the second time in history. Bettini and German sprinter Erik Zabel were among the most prominent riders to quit after this season, while Mario Cipollini made a brief comeback in the early months of the year. Despite even tighter controls and warnings concerning doping, and the introduction of the blood passport by the UCI, several major races, including the Giro and Tour were faced with positive tests. Mirco Lorenzetto (born 13 July 1981 in Vittorio Veneto) is an Italian former racing cyclist, who competed as a professional between 2004 and 2011. During his career, Lorenzetto took victories in the 2007 Tour Méditerranéen, the 2009 Giro di Sardegna and the 2009 Giro del Friuli. He now works as a directeur sportif for UCI Continental team . Career Lorenzetto became a professional cyclist in 2004. His first victory came in 2007, when he won a stage in the Tour Méditerranéen, in a close sprint over Daniele Bennati. The year 2009 started good for Lorenzetto, as in March he already had three victories. In April 2009, during the Tour of Flanders, Lorenzetto crashed and was taken to hospital, but a few days later he could leave the hospital without serious damage. In the 2015 Tour de France, Bonnet crashed at full speed on stage 3 near Huy in Belgium after clipping wheels of a rider in front. Allan Howard Davis (born 27 July 1980) is an Australian former professional road racing cyclist, who last rode for UCI ProTour team . Born in Ipswich, Queensland, Davis resides in Bundaberg, Queensland and in Spain. Known for his sprinting ability, he started competitive cycling at the age of 10, and turned professional in 2002.
