The 2008 San Diego City Attorney election occurred on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. The primary election was held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008. Municipal elections in California are officially non-partisan, although most members do identify a party preference. A two-round system was used for the election, starting with a primary in June followed by a runoff in November between the top-two candidates. Jan Goldsmith
Jan Ira Goldsmith (born January 26, 1951) is a Republican politician from San Diego, California, United States who served as the San Diego City Attorney from 2008 to 2016. Education He received his undergraduate degree from American University in Washington, DC and his J.D. degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. Career Upon graduating from law school he worked in private practice specializing in business litigation. He was also a council member and mayor for the city of Poway, California. California State Legislature Goldsmith was elected to three terms in the California state legislature, representing California's 75th State Assembly district from 1992 until 1998. Mike Aguirre
Jules Michael Aguirre (born 1949), more commonly known as Michael Jules Aguirre, was the City Attorney for the City of San Diego, California, from 2004 to 2008. In 2013, he was a candidate for mayor in a special election following Mayor Bob Filner's resignation. He lost to Kevin Faulconer, placing fourth in a field of eleven candidates. Two-round System
The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate. It generally ensures a majoritarian result, not a simple plurality result as under First past the post. Under the two-round election system, the election process usually proceeds to a second round only if in the first round no candidate received a simple majority (more than 50%) of votes cast, or some other lower prescribed percentage. Scott Peters (politician)
Scott Harvey Peters (born June 17, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative from California's 50th congressional district since 2023. His district includes both coastal and central portions of San Diego, as well as the suburbs of Poway and Coronado. A member of the Democratic Party, Peters served two terms on the San Diego City Council from 2000 to 2008, and was the first person to hold the post of president of the city council (2006–2008). Brian Maienschein
Brian Maienschein (born May 22, 1969) is an American attorney and politician currently serving in the California State Assembly, representing the 77th district, encompassing parts of northeastern San Diego since 2012. Prior to serving in the state assembly, he was a member of the San Diego City Council, and the city's first Commissioner on Homelessness.
