2008 Pembrokeshire County Council Election
Elections to Pembrokeshire County Council were held on 1 May 2008. It was preceded by the 2004 election and followed by the 2012 election. On the same day there were elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales, and to community council elections in Wales. There were also elections elsewhere in the United Kingdom Overview All 60 council seats were up for election. The previous council was controlled by Independents as had been the case since the authority was formed in 1995. The Independents retained control in 2008 and Labour achieved its worst result of the four elections fought thus far. Pembrokeshire County Council
Pembrokeshire County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Penfro) is the governing body for Pembrokeshire, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. Political control The first election to the council was held in 1995, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its powers on 1 April 1996. Since 1996 the majority of the seats on the council have always been held by independent councillors, with different groupings forming among the independents at different times. Elections normally take place every five years. The last elections were on 5 May 2022. The 2021 elections were postponed to 2022 to avoid a clash with the 2021 Senedd election. Leadership The leaders of the council since 1996 have been: David Simpson was elected as the new council leader on 25 May 2017, after the previous leader Jamie Adams had withdrawn from the contest. Elections to Pembrokeshire County Council were held on 10 June 2004. It was preceded by the 1999 election and followed by the 2008 election. The results were drawn from the Pembrokeshire County Council website but the relevant page has now (2013) been deleted. On the same day there were elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales (all except Anglesey), and to community council elections in Wales. There were also elections elsewhere in the United Kingdom Overview All 60 council seats were up for election. The previous council was controlled by Independents as had been the case since the authority was formed in 1995. 2012 Pembrokeshire County Council Election
The fifth election to Pembrokeshire County Council was held on 3 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and followed by the 2017 election. On the same day there were elections to 20 of the other 21 local authorities in Wales (all except Anglesey), community council elections in Wales and other elections elsewhere in the United Kingdom All 60 council seats were up for election. The previous council was controlled by Independents as had been the case since the authority was formed in 1995. The Independents retained control in 2012. Councillors elected in this election are to serve an extended five-year term, after the Welsh Government announced the next elections would be moved from 2016 to 2017 to avoid clashing with the next Welsh Assembly election in 2016 (which in turn had been delayed a year to avoid clashing with the next general election). 2008 United Kingdom Local Elections
The 2008 United Kingdom local elections were held on 1 May 2008. These elections took place in 137 English Local Authorities and all Welsh Councils. There were also extraordinary elections held for four of the new unitary authorities being created, in Northumberland, County Durham and Cheshire (two councils – Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester). Scheduled elections for Penwith in Cornwall, Shrewsbury and Atcham in Shropshire, Bedford and South Bedfordshire in Bedfordshire and five district councils in Cheshire were cancelled, due to the up-coming unitary authorities being established in those counties. The Labour Party finished in 3rd place by vote share, trailing the Conservatives by 20%, the largest such margin ever between the two main parties. Amroth (electoral Ward)
Amroth was the name of a county electoral ward in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It covered the community of Amroth which, as well as the village of Amroth included Summerhill, Stepaside, Pleasant Valley and Wiseman's Bridge and well as the hamlets at Llanteg and Llanteglos. A ward of Pembrokeshire County Council since 1995, it was previously a ward of the former South Pembrokeshire District Council. Following the recommendations of a boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales, effective from the 2022 local elections, the Amroth county ward was merged with the north part of the neighbouring community of Saundersfoot to create a new ward of 'Amroth and Saundersfoot North'. Community Council Amroth is also the name of a community ward which covers Amroth village, Pleasant Valley, Stepaside and Wisemans Bridge. Burton is the name of an electoral ward in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The ward consists of the communities, of Burton and Rosemarket. Haverfordwest Priory (electoral Ward)
Haverfordwest Priory is the name of an electoral ward in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It covers the southern edge of the town of Haverfordwest, mostly west of the river but including Haverfordwest railway station at its eastern extreme, the Haverfordwest Priory from which it takes its name and the residential areas bounded by Freeman's Way and surrounding the Pembrokeshire College campus. The ward elects a councillor to Pembrokeshire County Council. Priory ward also elects four community councillors to Haverfordwest Town Council. Pembroke Dock Market
Pembroke Dock Market is the name of an electoral ward in the town of Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Description Pembroke Dock Market ward covers the central area of the town between Bush Street and Milton Terrace, as well as Llanreath and Pembroke Dockyard. Pembroke Dock Pennar ward lies to the south and Pembroke Dock Central lies to the north. The ward elects a county councillor to Pembrokeshire County Council and three town councillors to Pembroke Dock Town Council. According to the 2011 UK Census the population of the ward was 1,897. Town Council elections Town councillor and Pembroke Dock mayor Jane McNaughton resigned in November 2017 over the issue of dealing with alleged bullying of staff. Christine Gwyther
Christine Margery Gwyther (born 1959) is a Welsh Labour politician. She won the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency seat in the first National Assembly for Wales elections in1999 and held it until 2007. She lost her seat in the 2007 Welsh Assembly Elections, to Conservative candidate Angela Burns. Background Gwyther was born in Pembroke Dock. Before going into politics, she worked as a Pembrokeshire County Council Development Officer. Political career During the first term of the Assembly, Gwyther was the Minister of Agriculture under the leadership of Alun Michael. She is a vegetarian and as a result was criticised by some farmers and opposition parties. South Pembrokeshire ( cy, De Sir Benfro) was one of six local government districts of Dyfed, Wales from 1974 to 1996. Preseli Pembrokeshire District Council
Preseli Pembrokeshire (, ; cy, Preseli Sir Benfro) was one of six local government districts of Dyfed in West Wales from 1974 to 1996. Until 1987 the name of the district was Preseli. The district took its name from the Preseli Hills. Pembrokeshire County Council Elections
Pembrokeshire ( ; cy, Sir Benfro ) is a county in the south-west of Wales. It is bordered by Carmarthenshire to the east, Ceredigion to the northeast, and the rest by sea.
