Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. Michael Neary (bishop)
Michael Neary KC*HS (born 15 April 1946) is an Irish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the Archbishop of Tuam from 1995 to 2021. Early life Michael Neary was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, and received his early education at St. Patrick's Boys National School, Castlebar, and St. Jarlath's College, Tuam. He studied at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth and was ordained to the priesthood on 15 June 1971. Earning a doctorate in Divinity in 1975, he served as a curate in Belclare for one year before being appointed to the staff at the Presentation College, Headford. From 1978 to 1981, he furthered his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, earning a licentiate of Sacred Scripture; during that time he was also spiritual director at the Pontifical Irish College. The Satanic Sluts
In a pre-recorded episode of '' The Russell Brand Show'' broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on 18 October 2008, comedian Russell Brand and presenter Jonathan Ross made prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs that courted controversy in the United Kingdom. Brand and Ross called Sachs to interview him on air; when he did not answer, they left lewd messages on his answering machine, including comments about Brand's relationship with Sachs' granddaughter Georgina Baillie. The incident received little attention initially, but an article in ''The Mail on Sunday'' of 26 October 2008 led to widespread criticism of Brand, Ross and the editorial decisions of the BBC. The event became known as Sachsgate or Manuelgate (a reference to Sachs' ''Fawlty Towers'' character Manuel). Brand and Ross were criticised by a number of MPs, including Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and the BBC received a record number of complaints. City Channel
City Channel was an Irish television network that began broadcasting in October 2005, which focused primarily on local and regional television. It operated three stations: City Channel Dublin, City Channel Galway, and Channel South. The channel was replaced by RTÉ One +1 on 13 March 2012. Launch City Channel was given a licence by the BCI (now the BAI) on 31 January 2005 and began broadcasting in October 2005. City Channel was originally launched on the NTL and Chorus cable services in Dublin, Galway and Waterford, however all four services were available on the digital services of UPC Ireland. The company was also granted a licence for a fourth station called City 7, which would have been targeted at Dublin's Eastern Europeans. Channel South
Channel South was an Irish television channel, operated by City Channel, transmitting 24-hour local programming to Cork, Limerick, and parts of Kerry, Waterford, Clare and Tipperary since November 2008. Included in the station's programmes is an evening show called ''South Tonight'' presented by local celebrities. Background ''Channel South is a cable television channel operating in Cork, Limerick, and parts of County Kerry, County Waterford, County Clare and County Tipperary since November 2008, Republic of Ireland. It has received a licence by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland for cable and MMDS operation, and have secured carriage on the formerly NTL owned digital cable system in Dublin. It is the world's second longest-running late-night talk show, after the American ''The Tonight Show''. Gay Byrne
Gabriel Mary "Gay" Byrne (5 August 1934 – 4 November 2019) was an Irish presenter and host of radio and television. His most notable role was first host of '' The Late Late Show'' over a 37-year period spanning 1962 until 1999. ''The Late Late Show'' is the world's second longest-running chat show. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Gay", "Gaybo" or "Uncle Gaybo". His time working in Britain with Granada Television saw him become the first person to introduce The Beatles on-screen, and Byrne was later the first to introduce Boyzone on screen in 1993. ''Gaybo Laughs Back'' is an hour-long Irish television special and DVD released in November 2008. It was broadcast on RTÉ One on 9 November 2008 at 18:30, whilst the DVD was released on 15 November 2008, with over forty minutes of bonus material. It features RTÉ personality Gay Byrne, who introduces some of the comedy highlights from his thirty-seven years at the helm of the long-running television series, '' The Late Late Show''. ''The Sunday Times'' is a British newspaper whose circulation makes it the largest in Britain's quality press market category. It was founded in 1821 as ''The New Observer''. Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2007
The Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2007 is an Act of the Oireachtas (Irish parliament) which was enacted in April 2007. It deals with Irish Analogue broadcasting systems and the amendment of legislation on Digital Terrestrial Television dating back to 2001. This act amends previous acts in particular the Broadcasting Act 2001.
